From the pool in Las Vegas

How did you know I'm in aquatic maintenance JD?

Well we're all sitting here crying in our beer and wondering WTF happened. Piniella starts Fukake the first two games and we start sticking pins in our Piniella voodoo doll. Then Piniella inserts the lame as a pinch hitter and the tiny dancer actually comes through with a pinch hit. Up is down and down is up.

Still the disappointment of this team's post season performance from manager on down is devastating.

We're all coming to realize that this team has a number of not ready for prime time players.

Can we all finally agree that the Cubs don't need a whiff machine at the top of the order? A streaky player like Soriano has to be moved down in the order.

How about Fontenot? The kid puts the bat on the ball with authority. On the Dodgers, this kid would be starting. Why? Well it's not because the Dodgers have a scrub at 2B. It's because Torre understands putting the ball in play from players other than your bangers is critical.

Does anyone still doubt the ability of Marshall? He came into the games in high pressure situations and came up big. Unlike most of his counterparts, Marshall showed the spotlight doesn't faze him one bit.

Still the Cubs pitching, except for the deer in the headlights performance by Dempster and Piniella's inability to understand the gravity of leaving a pitcher in the game that was clearly off his game, was good enough to win.

The offense was clearly the culprit and we have to ask ourselves why? The Cubs we near the top of the league in runs scored, walks and OBP. So how do they lay an egg in the playoffs?

The Dodgers pitching was outstanding, but it was their plates appearances followed a game plan that allowed them to capitalize on their opportunities to score.

Piniella moves certainly didn't help, but the games outcome usually rests with the players. I for one, think Piniella has lost the team.

If you dissagree, just think what the players must have thought about Piniella's refusal to sit Fukake until Piniella was the only one in the civilized world to realize Fukake was outmatched.

Why wasn't Fontenot getting more AB's? You face a tough RH pitching staff in the playoffs and you start Fukake instead of Fontenot? WTF!

How about a contact hitter like Johnson? He doesn't get even one AB in the playoffs? Edmonds had terrible AB's against Billingsly, so why not start Johnson? Piniella can't just go by the book on this righty/lefty bullshit.

Some bold moves should be made for next season, but unless we get a George Stienbrenner type owner, more heartache will probably be in store for the faithful.

Anyway, I've just become the biggest Rays fan for the rest of this postseason. After 30 years of playing and 10 years of coaching, I still love this game and the Rays are a great story.
If you'd like a little irony, many pundits are saying the Rays are winning because Piniella isn't standing in their way anymore. How true, how true.
