Kroenke Owns 62% in Arsenal Shares, but Should Arsenal Fans Celebrate?

Mohamed Eldin MasriApr 11, 2011

Finally. Arsenal finally have an owner, a filthy rich owner, a guy who owns teams from almost every sports league that exists in America.

The previous line is what the majority of Gooners are saying, finally a man who can splash the cash and make Arsenal even more powerful, make Arsenal a team that has great backup players and world class first team members, and lest we forget, make Arsenal a team that can challenge for silverware with absolute ease.

Kroenke owns 62 percent, according to the rules and regulations, when a shareholder owns 30 percent, he is forced to announce a complete take over, and even the American businessman announced so himself.

But is it really so? Will Stan Kroenke really be the difference maker for the red and white army?

Who is Stan Kroenke?

First things first, many Arsenal fans have no clue who Stan Kroenke is.

Kroenke is an American Business entrepreneur, he is best known for owning Kroenke Sports Enterprises, a company that owns the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Rams, the list goes on.

What people don't know is this; Kroenke is considered a reclusive man by most people, he's even popularly known as "Silent Stan" because he almost never gives interviews to the press. And as quoted by many sources; "He rarely interferes in his teams' day-to-day operations".

Indeed, he almost never interferes with his teams' operations, if there's one person to celebrate the arrival of Kroenke at Arsenal more than the Arsenal fans, it's none other than Arsene Wenger.

If there's one thing fans can bet on, its that even if Kroenke injects Arsenal with $50 million or more, the probability is that Wenger will refuse to spend. It's only expected from the Frenchman at this point of his life, he didn't change his way when he was younger, he's not gonna change at the age of 61.

Is Kroenke's arrival at Arsenal a good thing ?

As things stand, he's not gonna be the difference maker. He's no Abravomich, he's not the Glazer family, it's not expected from him to spend hundreds of millions on players, especially when the manager himself is in no mood to spend.

Kroenke's arrival at Arsenal isn't a completely good thing, but it's not bad either, he is bringing stability with him to the club, so it's not all bad once the Arsenal fans think about it.

Is stability what Arsenal fans are looking for? Especially Kroenke's type of stability?

No, it most definitely isn't.

Arsenal fans have been dying for an owner that splashes the cash, a guy like Usmanov who has been pleading Wenger and the board to spend, but Kroenke looks at Arsenal as yet another business opportunity. While Usmanov looked at things in the same perspective, he's willing to spend on world class players in the process.

Many Arsenal fans stated that they'd love to see the club sell Diaby, Almunia and the like, and instead spend on world class names like Torres and Ibrahimovic.

That's sadly not going to happen anytime soon, not because Kroenke isn't willing to supply Arsenal with the money, but mainly because Wenger isn't willing to spend, and Kroenke has already stated how strong his faith is in Wenger and Peter Hill-Wood. So with the brains of the club still the same, it's hard reading about any big name signings in the summer.

Should Arsenal fans celebrate the arrival of Kroenke?

It depends. Do fans want money signings? Or do they want Wenger ball?

Conclusion:

The arrival of Stan Kroenke will hardly change anything regarding Arsenal's way in operating their day to day activities, Wenger will rejoice, his job is even safer than before, while the Arsenal fans will hope to see something different from Kroenke this time around. Tens of millions and ordering Wenger to spend would be the perfect beginning for the Kroenke era. But for Arsenal, one thing seems certain.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
