NFL Trade Speculation: 3 Trades the New England Patriots Could Make on Draft Day

Tony SantorsaApr 10, 2011

Ever since 2000, the New England Patriots, led by Bill Belichick, have been known for trading back and fourth during the NFL draft.

In those past seasons, Belichick and company have completed the most draft-day trades standing at 42—six alone last season.

Entering the 2011 NFL draft, the Patriots have nine selections, with six of them being in the top 92 (three in the top 33).

It's almost guaranteed that the Patriots are going to make some trades this year, but the big question is with who. New England tends to trade back, but don't be surprised if the Patriots move up a few spots in the first round.

As the NFL is in a locked-out state, no teams can complete trades with any players, so if any trades do occur, it will be strictly draft picks.

Using the draft pick value chart, I will present three possible trades with three different teams that New England could complete at the 2011 NFL draft.

Washington Redskins

Potential Trade

Washing Redskins get: New England 17th overall (950), 74th overall (220), 125th overall (47)—1217

New England Patriots get: Washington 10th overall (1,300)—1,300

If Bill Belichick feels that he wants to move up into the top 10, he could do so with the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins do not have a second or third round selection, and New England has plenty.

Belichick's track record does not show Belichick wanting to trade up into the top 10, but if there's a salary cap on rookie contracts, Belichick may be interested in grabbing a high quality player.

San Diego Chargers

Potential Trade

San Diego Chargers get: New England 28th overall (660) and 92nd (132)—792

New England Patriots get: San Diego 50th overall (400), 61st (292, and 2012 fourth round (estimated value = 50)—742

Over the past couple of weeks, there have been several reports of New England and San Diego being potential trading partners.

The Charger swill be gaining another first round pick, and Belichick will continue to stockpile picks in the middle rounds and a fourth round pick in 2012.

Seattle Seahawks

Potential Trade

Seattle Seahawks get: New England 17th overall (950) and 74th (220)—1,170

New England Patriots get: Seattle 2012 first round (estimated value = 1,000) and 50th (400)—1,400

It is clear that the Seattle Seahawks need a quarterback, as Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Whitehurst are not the future quarterback of the franchise.

So, if Seattle is desperate, they will pay a lot to grab their quarterback.

As New England gives up their 17th overall, Belichick gets what he wants, another future first round draft pick.
