FYI WIRZ: NHRA Valdosta Track Hosts Top 255 Mph Run on a Motorcycle by Hogan

Dwight DrumApr 9, 2011

Korry Hogan, Top Fuel Motorcycle drag racer, blistered the adequate concrete track at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Adel, Georgia near Valdosta Saturday evening with an incredible 255 mph run.

Hogan, known for his racing ability and articulate comments, was on game when he rode a motorcycle into virgin speed territory.

“Well, I just ran 255.00 mph,” Hogan said. “Yes, I ride a fast motorcycle. Wait, I ride the fastest motorcycle.”

The track is home to motorcycle drag racers from across the U.S. this weekend as the second attempt by distributors and racers found solid foundation.

A group of dedicated manufacturers teamed up to replace the primary sanction—AMA Dragbike—that abruptly ceased existence in 2010 to organize an event at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Adel, Georgia near Valdosta.

Manufacturers Cup organizer Jay Regan of Murdoch Racing Enterprises (MRE) described the venue.

“The facility is a great facility in terms of performance of the racetrack and pit area,” Regan said. “It’s all paved. There are not any tumble weeds rolling around.  The track owners and the management are great people to work with.  They’re motorcycle friendly and they want to put on a good product as well.”

Legendary Top Fuel speedster, Larry “Spiderman” McBride chimed in with Regan’s take.

“This is a great deal,” McBride said. “What the manufacturers have done is awesome.  It’s a great race.”

NHRA Full Throttle 2010 Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, L.E. Tonglet, attended the SGMP race during an off weekend and shared his thoughts about good use of time. .

“You’re always learning you never stop learning coming out here watching all the bikes is fun,” Tonglet said. “You just try to have fun.  I don’t know about learning anything specific, but it all helps.”

As a corollary to the fun of speed, Larry “Spiderman” McBride took the time to send a safety message to those who would take their two-wheel power to the highways without a regard for safety. In short, those who seek the thrill of extreme speed around normal limit driving by others for the instant but hazardous rush of the ultimate moment need to take notice.

“If you’re going to race and speed do it on a racetrack, absolutely do not do it on the street,” McBride said. “The end result is not good.  It’s not if you’re going to get hurt, it’s when and how bad and if you can live through it.

“I do a lot of talks to kids and at military bases.  I strongly recommend—do not race on the street.”
