MFC 29 Conquer: Post-Fight Press Conference Highlights
MFC 29 Conquer finished as a complete success here in Windsor on Friday night, and the winners were available to the media in a post-fight conference.
President and CEO Mark Pavelich announced that the Submission of the Night award went to hometown hero Ali Mokdad for his rear naked choke of Andreas Spang at 1:35 of round one. Knockout of the Night was awarded to welterweight champ Douglas Lima for his quick KO of Terry Martin.
Some highlights from the post-fight room:
Pavelich gave out much credit to everyone around him for making the show a success, from SL Feldman & Associates all the way down to Ceasars staff and media for taking part.
Personally, I was impressed by the show. I was jacked to be there and I give much of the credit to Pavelich. He should be congratulated for a job well done.
Marcus Davis took us through his experience of getting to MFC 29 Conquer, notably the fact that he had to cut 15 pounds in one day before the fight. He gave us some insight to the sacrifice needed to compete in this sport.
Missed and cancelled flights and lost luggage led to Davis having to improvise his pre-fight routine, but he performed admirably.
Responding to a question asking whether he thought he could pull off a submission like he did based on the history of his ground game, Pete Spratt responded confidently, "Of course I did, I'm an MMA fighter," which prompted chuckles from the room.
Good on Spratt. He's a wily veteran who paved the way for others.
Douglas Lima commented the same when asked about his KO of Martin, as Lima is more known for his submission prowess. "When people say I can't stand up and fight, or that I will get hurt bad, that just pisses me off. Like Spratt said, I'm an MMA fighter, I can do it all."
I don't doubt Lima. This kid has skill and a future in this sport.
The MFC's launch into Ontario was a great one. The venue was fantastic and top-notch; from "The Ring" to the COLOSSEUM floor setup and mostly to the fight card, this show delivered.
A quality event in my neighborhood has been a long time coming for this MMA fan and reporter, and I hope it's the first of many.
