WWE WrestleMania 27 Results: 10 Reasons The Rock Shouldn't Be Wrestling Cena

Robert AitkenJun 5, 2018

A shocker came to light at the end of RAW when John Cena and The Rock agreed to a match at next year's WrestleMania.

While we have a lot of time to talk about this match (Wednesday marks 360 days until April 1, 2012), we have to wonder how good of an idea this is. Sure, we all wanted to see these two go at it, but it might not be what we all hoped it would be.

There are many other factors that come into play with this matchup, especially when it is a match placed a year from now.

While I might be a bad wrestling fan for looking for the negative in this collision, I can name 10 things to ask yourself or to think about before this match. Believe me, you have plenty of time to do so.

He's a Movie Star

Sure, the movies are not always good, but The Rock does make a lot of money as a movie star. At WrestleMania 28, he won't be wrestling like a casual celebrity. There will be a legitimate match between The Rock and John Cena.

Any injury risk becomes that much more risky for The Rock, who needs to be healthy for his movie roles, like his upcoming role in the new movie in the Fast and the Furious series.

Other movie roles are going to be offered to The Rock in the coming year. Will his training for WrestleMania 28 cost him a movie?

What would a setback or injury in training cost him? He may be in shape, but he will be 39 years old next month.

Cena Out of Title Hunt for the Year

2 of 10

Don't expect to see this image in the next twelve months. While we have no idea what John Cena will be doing for the rest of 2011, we know that he will be at WrestleMania 28 to face The Rock.

This means Cena will not be WWE Champion because The Rock will not be given a world championship match at WrestleMania at this point in his life.

The problem with deciding on this match so early is that it limits what can happen to his character this year. Any decision for Cena becomes tainted when we all think about it and say "well, he is supposed to face The Rock at WrestleMania, so he can't..."

By the way, we can also take him all but out of the Royal Rumble discussion for next January. An interesting note: John Cena has never had a match at WrestleMania where there was not a title on the line.

WrestleMania 28 Repeats 27

3 of 10

Let's see what WrestleMania 27 gave us. it gave us a lot of build between The Rock and John Cena, which overshadowed Cena's actual match that night. We were also dominated by the idea of Triple H and The Undertaker.

Let's look now at WrestleMania 28 and what we can expect. We can expect The Rock and John Cena to have build going into WrestleMania. We are also supposedly looking out for Triple H and The Undertaker once again.

Without sounding like you are stuttering, WWE would be smart in not literally copying one Mania in the next year's version of it, especially when we are just days removed from WrestleMania.

A Year Too Long for Hype

4 of 10

A good match can be hyped in just one night if need be. A great storyline can be structured over the course of a few weeks or even months.

What about an entire year for a storyline that already existed in the public eye for a while and was escalated in WWE over the past few weeks?

Is a year too much time? Is it possible to invest too much time into one storyline? What if John Cena gets injured? Are we supposed to expect The Rock to keep the storyline in the front pages while Cena is on the shelf?

We can't even guarantee that we will see The Rock every single week. With too much time before the match still, many will get bored with the buildup of this match that is about as far away as a WrestleMania match can be.

Takes a Spot Away from a Young Guy

5 of 10

This is Evan Bourne. You may know him as that small guy that jobbed to Alberto Del Rio on RAW Monday night. Less than a year ago, Bourne was on his way to a push into the main event before getting injured.

He then came back recently and was featured throughout in the WrestleMania commercials and promos. Bourne was not on the card this past Sunday.

Bourne is the poster child for a young guy that doesn't get that shot due to stunts like this. We all complained about Snooki getting a WrestleMania match over the likes of Kelly Kelly or Eve Torres. Why is this any different?

Should Focus on Hall of Fame

6 of 10

Let me do those of you who don't see the obviousness of next year's Hall of Fame class. The Rock is now back with WWE and WrestleMania is in Miami. The Rock is from Miami. Translation: The Rock will likely headline the Class of 2012 Hall of Fame.

Especially in the past few years, there have been Hall of Fame inductees that are in actual matches at WrestleMania. We saw it with Ricky Steamboat and Ric Flair, while The Hart Family all appeared at WrestleMania 26, when Stu Hart was inducted that weekend.

The thing that I loved the most about Shawn Michaels getting inducted this year was that he did not get involved in the HHH/Undertaker match, which many people speculated about and feared.

If The Rock gets into the Hall of Fame in 2012, he will own the Hall of Fame and headline one of the most hyped matches in WrestleMania history.

Which Match Gets Bumped?

7 of 10

Daniel Bryan and Sheamus were scheduled to wrestle on Sunday at WrestleMania, but did not due to some shuffling in the card prior to the event. Instead, the title match went on as the dark match and was ruled a no-contest.

It ended up turning into a battle royale with the two being among the final three participants. Neither of them won. The match was then seen on RAW the next night with Sheamus retaining.

Much of the belief is that the match was made into the dark match due to time being added to Undertaker/HHH. That match also is believed to have cut into some time from the WWE Championship match.

Imagine if there is another Undertaker/HHH and a Rock/Cena match. The amount of time taken up by just those two matches will likely cut into more than just one match for next year's WrestleMania.

The Rock Would Have to Lose

8 of 10

John Cena is the face of the company right now and would need a victory from this year-long feud in order to move on and keep his spot at the top of the company. The Rock does not gain anything positive from winning this match at WrestleMania.

It does more harm to Cena than good to The Rock. Nothing else shy of a John Cena win makes sense. If you are The Rock, why bother with this feud if you will end up losing in the end?

Don't Rewrite History

9 of 10

This will likely be billed as an Icon vs Icon match at WrestleMania. The Rock was a part of one of those at a WrestleMania when he faced Hulk Hogan.

The electricity of that moment was one of the more legendary moments in WrestleMania history. With Hogan off in TNA and WWE not acknowledging him in most regards, it is almost like this match never really happened.

The fact is that this match did happen, whether WWE will recognize it or not. In fact, it almost seems like WWE has been obsessed with generations colliding ever since Hogan left.

This match, coupled with the recent WWE All-Stars video game, has become a running theme of establishing the legacy of this time period. What's next: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs Randy Orton in a battle of snake-inspired gimmicks?

What's Left to Prove?

10 of 10

I love seeing The Rock back in wrestling as much as anyone else but I can't imagine why he needs to wrestle again. What else is left for The Rock to prove in his wrestling career?

If he was a general manager of some kind, The Rock would be able to use his mic skills and layeth the occasional smacketh down on a candyass.

Another WrestleMania match does not make or break The Rock's legacy in this business. It just seems unnecessary for The Rock.

While it helps Cena's legacy in a historical aspect, it will not change the fact that Cena is one of the main guys, if not the lone main guy, of this generation.

None of this changes any of that, so you have to wonder why it is even a good idea to bother with this match.
