WWE Wrestlemania 27: Undertaker and Triple H Are Business as Usual

Tom ClarkApr 1, 2011

Wrestlemania 27 will see yet another big-time match between two big-time players.

The Undertaker and Triple H will square off on the biggest stage of them all, putting real money in the bank and bringing fans to their feet. It’s what they do.

Sunday night will be a spectacle for fans. For 'Taker and Hunter, however, it’s business as usual.

To be honest, this is not the match that I personally wanted to see.

When the video package featuring the shadowy, rain-soaked figure began running on RAW, I was cautiously optimistic.

Okay, I thought, this is Undertaker. Got to be. Yet, in the back of my mind lurked the idea that there was a slight chance it could be someone else.

Sting was not the first name that came to mind.

For whatever reason, I didn’t really speculate as to who it could be. Instead, I chose to just watch the segment and enjoy the possibilities.

It is not my nature, to be sure.

As a lifelong fan and as someone who spent several years in the business, I tend to be quite the analyst—the ultimate fan boy, who is so in tune that he can usually call it before it happens. It’s kind of my thing.

But sometimes I like to let it happen. Sometimes I'm content just being a fan. I don't read spoilers on the day of a program I plan on watching. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am not the kind of person who reads the last page of a suspense novel first.

So, it was with some trepidation and a little surprise that I read of all the speculation online concerning the Undertaker video.

It’s not just 'Taker in that video, everyone said. It’s also Sting.

It made sense. Totally. Who else would Sting work with if he signed for the WWE? Undertaker, his gimmick, his style in the ring, his link to the old WCW—everything just fits.

This would be a dream match of epic proportions.

Two legends of the business who had never touched, working the biggest event of the year.

I wrote a column about this very match back in January, and it did appear as if my literary trip into fan boy fantasy land was quickly becoming a reality.

Unfortunately, as we all know, a deal between Sting and the WWE was never struck and instead we have Triple H filling the void.

Now, as fans, we didn’t exactly trade down on this one.

This is The Game we’re talking about. The Cerebral Assassin, The King of Kings, the guy who has been a constant in WWE since 1995.

Following his epic rise in DX, Triple H has forever been on the top tier of talent in the company.

Love him or hate him, he is the WWE and he is all about business.

Hunter’s love for the business and old school dedication has always been there. It's part of why he is so respected among fans all over the world.

Considering his main inspiration for becoming a wrestler in the first place was the Nature Boy Ric Flair, it's easy to see where his passion for the sport comes from.

He has excelled at every level of the business he has been on, and continues to be one of the biggest names in pro wrestling today.

Of course, we cannot forget that his legacy is directly intertwined with the ruling family of this country’s largest wrestling entertainment company.

Yeah, Hunter is married to the boss’ daughter.

He gets a lot of heat for this, and has done ever since the day he and Stephanie McMahon first started dating.

It’s natural for a lot of fans to feel the way they do about him, and the question of whether or not his place in the company is a direct result of his marriage is always a hot topic.

Would Hunter be the man that he is today if not for his ties to the McMahon family? Would he be a 13-time World Champion, consistently a main event guy, a man who is already painted as a legend in the business?

I suppose it will always be open for debate.

But hey, we’re pro wrestling fans. Debate is what we do best.

For me, what is not in question is Hunter’s ability in the ring.

He has always been a good worker, but years of big time matches, combined with his intense approach to his character, has created a performer that is second-to-none in overall presentation.

Well, perhaps second to one.

Undertaker is the perfect foil for Triple H in the ring. Hunter’s character is all about, for lack of a better phrase, ruthless aggression. He often uses intimidation in the ring. He is as tough as they come and backs down from no one.

Of course, Undertaker is the Undertaker—his character is all about aggressive intimidation, with no fear and no surrender.

Undertaker versus Hunter is truly a prime example of two characters who are so alike that their individual personalities begin to fade away, and what is left are two old school wrestlers who really want to put on the best match of the night.

No, Sting will not be standing across the ring from Undertaker on Sunday night. That match, at this point, is unfortunately probably never going to happen. Yes, 'Taker has already beaten Hunter before. In fact, Hunter is one of the victims of his streak.

However, as the song goes, you can’t always get what you want, but you might find you’ll get what you need.

Fans need Undertaker to have a great match at Wrestlemania. Hunter has made a career of having great matches. The two are very familiar with each other and know what is expected of them on the biggest show of the year.

They will not disappoint.

Is this the end of the streak or will Hunter become the Undertaker's latest victim? I, for one, could care less. Just ring the bell already. Let’s do this.
