Deja Vu for CC Sabathia

Glenn MooreOct 3, 2008

New team. New league. New opponents. Same results.

In his first postseason start for the Milwaukee Brewers, CC Sabathia didn't even make it out of the fourth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. Yet it continues the streak of non-productive postseason starts for the lefty.

In 2007, the Indians were on the verge of going to the World Series for the first time since 1997. Up three games to one on the Boston Red Sox, Sabathia took the hill at home.

Instead of closing the door on the Red Sox, CC choked, and the rest is history. The Indians went on to lose the series in seven games in Boston. Ask anybody around Cleveland, and they will tell you that the Indians would have won their first World Series title since 1948.

Instead, the postseason hangover was in effect in 2008, which led to CC being traded to the Brewers for prospects.

His cumulative 2007 postseason stats were as follows: 2-1 with a 8.80 ERA in three starts, while only going 15 innings. Also, he walked 13 batters in those 15 innings. It seems that when it comes to the playoffs, CC just doesn't have the stuff that he has in the regular season.

Sabathia is a free agent in the offseason. Teams with money to throw around can take the chance on Sabathia—teams like the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, or Cubs. But would a mid-market team take a chance on signing him for over $140 million if he proved that he can't pitch in the big game.

The Indians went 16 games above .500 after CC left. Would they have done it with him? Maybe. But it proves Sabathia is not worth Johan Santana money. Yes, he gets teams into the postseason, but all regular-season stats go out the window when October hits.

The Brewers are down 0-2 to the Phillies. Their season is pretty much over, but will CC get a chance to redeem himself and prove he is a big money, big-game pitcher? Only time will tell. But with every bad postseason start, money signs are leaving the ballpark.
