UFC 129 Fight Card: Power Ranking the Current Champions in the UFC

Tim McTiernanApr 23, 2011

As everyone knows by now, the UFC has brought in the lighter weight classes from the WEC, and the UFC now has seven weight classes. The 135-pound bantamweight division and the 145-pound featherweight division, are the new ones.

The existing classes are the 155-pound lightweight class, the 170-pound welterweight class, 185-pound middleweight class, 205-pound light heavyweight class and 265-pound heavyweight class.

Every weight class has to have a champion, right?

But which champion is the most dominant?

Here is a power ranking of the current champions in the UFC.

7. Bantamweight: Dominick Cruz

1 of 7

Dominick Cruz (17-1) is the current UFC bantamweight champion.

Cruz defeated Scott Jorgensen at WEC 53 to retain the WEC bantamweight title and to win the inaugural UFC one.

He won the WEC title against Brian Bowles at WEC 47, then went on to defend it two more times.

Now that he is the UFC champion, he is going to defend his UFC title at UFC 132, where he will headline the card against the only man to defeat him, Urijah Faber.

6. Featherweight: Jose Aldo

2 of 7

Jose Aldo (18-1) is the current UFC featherweight champion.

Much in the same way that Cruz became the bantamweight champion, Aldo defended the WEC championship at WEC 51, and after the addition of the lighter weight classes, he was promoted to the UFC featherweight champion.

He was supposed to debut at UFC 125, but injuries forced him back further and further. He is now set to make the first defense of his UFC title as the co-main event of UFC 129 against Mark Hominick.

Aldo is ahead of Cruz based on his performance in the WEC.

5. Heavyweight: Cain Velasquez

3 of 7

Cain Velasquez (9-0) is the current UFC heavyweight champion.

Cain won the UFC belt when he TKO'd Brock Lesnar in the first round of their UFC 121 bout. Cain has been destroying every single competitor put in front of him. The only person to make it to a decision with Cain has been Cheick Kongo.

Cain put on a clinic against Lesnar, and finished him in embarrassing fashion. Embarrassing for Lesnar that is.

Cain was going to defend the belt against Junior dos Santos at UFC 129, but a torn rotator cuff forced him to pull out.

Lesnar and dos Santos are currently coaching on The Ultimate Fighter, and Cain will defend his title against the winner of their fight.

4. Light Heavyweight: Jon Jones

4 of 7

Jon Jones (13-1) is the current UFC light heavyweight champion.

Jones is one of the brightest young stars in the sport. He tore through every single person who stood in his way to the championship, including the legend who he took the belt from, Shogun Rua.

Jones was given a title shot after submitting Ryan Bader at UFC 126.

Six weeks later, he TKO'd Shogun at UFC 128 to win the belt.

Jones' first title defense doesn't have a date, but it will be against his former training partner, Rashad Evans.

3. Lightweight: Frankie Edgar

5 of 7

Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) is the current UFC lightweight champion.

Edgar won the title from B.J. Penn at UFC 112, where he won via unanimous decision. Many people disagreed with the decision, and an immediate rematch was scheduled.

Edgar defended his title against Penn at UFC 118, and left no doubt this time. Edgar clearly won the fight, and nobody could say otherwise.

After that, Edgar fought Gray Maynard at UFC 125. In a performance where he showed the heart of a champion, he was rocked three times in a 10-8 first round, and he then came back and ended up fighting to a draw.

Edgar and Maynard are now set to do battle for a third time at UFC 130.

UFC Title Defenses: 2

2. Middleweight: Anderson Silva

6 of 7

Anderson Silva (28-4) is the current UFC middleweight champion.

Silva won the title from Rich Franklin all the way back at UFC 64 in 2006. Since then, he has beaten every single person the UFC has put in front of him.

In his last fight, he scored a highlight reel knockout of Vitor Belfort, when he front-kicked him in the face.

Silva's next fight is set to be against Yushin Okami at UFC 134: Rio.

UFC Title Defenses: 8

1. Welterweight: Georges St-Pierre

7 of 7

Georges St-Pierre (21-2) is the current and two-time UFC welterweight champion.

GSP first won the title at UFC 65, when he defeated Matt Hughes via TKO. We all know what happened from there. In his first defense, he was upset by Matt Serra, who TKO'd him in the first round.

After that, GSP defeated Josh Koscheck via unanimous decision. He then beat Matt Hughes for the interim welterweight championship.

Then he came back at Matt Serra with a vengeance. He TKO'd Serra in the second round in brutal fashion.

Since (and including) his third fight against Matt Hughes, GSP has not lost a round.

That's why I give him the top spot over Silva. Silva lost four rounds against Sonnen last year. GSP has won 26 consecutive rounds dating back to 2007. That is why GSP is the most dominant champion in the UFC right now.

Look for GSP to win some more rounds when he takes on Jake Shields this Saturday in the main event of UFC 129.
