College Football's Best Offenses: Three Powerhouses Putting Up Points
Every year, top tier college football programs beat up on their “little brothers” in the first few weeks of the season, but this year it seems a little different.
In recent memory, the line between “mid-major” and “BCS” schools has grown increasingly blurred in both college football and basketball. Just ask Michigan or any team that was upset in the NCAA tournament last year.
But as many teams are entering their third or fourth game this weekend, we have seen a big disparity between the BCS contenders and the teams in the so-called “middle of the pack.” We are truly being entertained by these top programs, week in and week out, as offensive fireworks have been going off like the 4th of July.
Here are the three teams that have been the most impressive, with locomotive-like offenses that never put on the brakes.
Oklahoma
Who wants to play Oklahoma? If the Sooners are on your schedule, you better buckle up, because it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
Sam Bradford leads the offense and has been putting up Heisman-like numbers in the first half. Bradford has many weapons at his disposal, especially DeMarco Murray and Juaquin Iglesias, who can turn a two-yard gain into a touchdown in the blink of an eye.
Oklahoma remains a program that will always have a stout defense. With a never easy Big 12 schedule in front of them, don’t be surprised to see some good games, but also expect more blowouts.
USC
They put up 35 on a senior-laden Ohio State defense that will most likely make some decent Big Ten offenses look pretty bad the rest of the season. Mark Sanchez looks like a three-year starter and Joe McKnight has the agility of a video-game character.
Future first rounders Ray Maualuga and Brian Cushing have anchored a sturdy defense that creates more turnovers than any other team.
Damien Williams has silenced any critics who questioned Southern Cal’s receiving corps, making them another team you don’t want to play.
Missouri
Could we see Jeremy Maclin and Chase Daniel in New York for the Heisman presentation later this year? Most definitely. The Tigers’ dynamic duo strikes fear in all defensive coordinators, as there has not been any way to stop them, or even slow them down.
Missouri quietly has a solid defense with many returning starters and does its job by forcing three and outs, allowing for the Missouri track meet to begin.
Could we see a Missouri/Oklahoma matchup in the Big 12 title game? Stat keepers, have your calculators ready.
I could have also included a few others, such as Georgia, Florida, and even the BYU Cougars, in the discussion. These teams too can easily light up a scoreboard with speedy athletes, along with outstanding quarterback play.
BYU hung 59 on UCLA, and you know Tim Tebow will continue to accumulate yards and touchdowns for his Gators. Don’t forget he has the Heisman trophy on his shelf.
All of the success for these programs is great for us, the viewers, as their performances promise to deliver great regular season play and bowl games in the future. Not only should these games be great, but it also seems assured that lots of points will be put on the board.
Defense wins championships, and defensive duels are sometimes great to watch, but offense is what really draws us in. High-scoring conference championship games and BCS Bowls with combined scores in the 70s would be memorable to witness, and I think we may have an abundance of these games to deposit into our memory banks this season.
Stay tuned every Saturday.
