The Top 14 World Football Cities
People talk about which clubs and leagues are the best in the world all the time.
People talk about which are the best places to live in all the time.
So, as a service to the community, I've compiled a list of the best 13 14 (that's right, we've got a new addition) places to live for football lovers.
You're Welcome
(P.S. good luck getting your family to move to any of these places and if you do happen to live in one of them, we all hate you, you lucky devils)
14. Liverpool, England
1 of 15
Although the Liverpudlian teams aren't flying so high this season they have a fine history and as such deserve to be on the list, even if it has been in last place. Here are their premier league sides:
Sorry Liverpool, you had to be moved down one slot for our new addition.
13.Mexico City, Mexico
2 of 15
Mexico City is a great footballing city, how could it not be when it houses 3 of what are classically called the big four in Mexico's Primera Division
The only reason it appears so low down here is because of those 3 sides being slightly off their usual pace. It takes a lot to make it into the top 10 of this list
Their top flight sides include:
- UNAM came 4th in the division last season and are enjoying the best start this season of the 3 Mexico City sides.
- Having placed first in the regular season last season, Cruz Azul are a big credit to Mexico City Football
- Finally Club America makes up the third, having come 14th last season
12. Glasgow, Scotland
3 of 15
Despite all the criticism the SPL is taking recently, Glasgow’s firm grip on the SPL top spots and the fact that it has 2 top-flight teams who make up the well known ‘Old Firm’ make it notable. The 'Old Firm' is a derby that makes most look very tame, it is made up of
- Rangers FC who are the SPL champions and are currently in second with two games in hand
- Celtic who are in the lead to win this year’s SPL and were runners up last year
It is also home of First Division side Partick Thistle
11. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
4 of 15
Who could forget our 2014 World Cup Hosts?
As well as being home to the magnificent Maracana Stadium where the final will be played at the 2014 World Cup, Rio is home to four of Brazil’s ‘Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A’ teams:
- Current Champs Fluminese, a club responsible for producing many top young talents in the past, who have gone on to European clubs
- Botafogo who finished 6th in 2010
- Vasco da Gama who finished 11th in 2010
- Flamengo who finished 14th in 2010 and who incidentally just signed Ronaldinho
And is also home to America Football club, a Serie D side
10. Rome, Italy
5 of 15
Rome is a city that has hosted the World Cup twice and can boast having the second most talent in one Stadium. The Stadio Olympico is the home of both Lazio and Roma, which makes for an interesting local derby
- Roma were runners up in the Italian Serie A last season and are currently sitting in fifth
- Lazio have braggers rights at the Stadio, as they are currently in third
9. Moscow, Russian
6 of 15
While not a traditionally considered a great football city, the Russian Premier league is far from a bad league and Moscow is home to four of the top teams in that league (which is currently in the process of switching from a March to November season to a more traditional European period starting this August). It also recently succeeded in it's bid to host the 2018 World Cup
- CSKA Moscow, who finished were runners up in the Russian Super Cup and Russian Premier League
- Spartak Moscow who finished 4th last season
- Lokomotiv Moscow who finished 5th
- Dynamo Moscow who finished 7th
8. Lisbon, Portugal
7 of 15
One of the most underrated leagues in Europe is the Portuguese Primeira Liga and the things the two Lisbon teams have done in that league have earned them a spot in the Top 10:
- Benfica, who won the league last year and are in second this year
- Sporting Lisbon (Sporting CP) who placed in fourth place in the last season and are third this.
7. Buenos Aires, Argentina
8 of 15
Buenos Aires manages to trump the rest simply by quantity, Buenos Aires is home to a whopping 24 football clubs (no I can’t name them all, but if you can please comment below telling us all their names). Six of which are notable teams in the Primera Division
- Vélez Sársfield, who are in 2nd this season
- River Plate, one half of Buenos Aires’s biggest rivalry (when you have 24 clubs you have to have a few good derbies). Currently in 4th but have won the title 33 times previously.
- Boca Juniors, the other half of Buenos Aires’s biggest rivalry. Who lie in 11hth this season, but you might know them better as the producers of such players as Carlos Tevez, Juan Riquelme and their finest former player, Diego Maradonna.
- Argentinos Juniors, who are in 12th
- San Lorenzo, 13th
- Huracan, 18th
If you’re decent at maths you’ll have worked out by now that that means over a quarter of top flight sides in Argentina are based in Buenos Aires, that’s what I call domination. Another notable Buenos Aires side is Ferro Carril Oeste who play in the Primera B and came 12th last season.
6. Athens, Greece
9 of 15
Athens is the home of the three biggest clubs in the Superleague, which is the top level of Greek competition.
- Panathinaikos, who won the 2010 Greek Championship and Cup, they are currently in second for the 2011 Greek Championship
- Olympiacos, who are the current leaders in the 2011 Greek Championship Race
- A.E.K Athens, who came 3rd last season in the Superleague and have the third highest number of points so far this season as well.
- None of these three teams have ever been relegated from top flight football in Greece and they are easily the most recognisable teams for those of us who don’t live in Greece as it is these teams who usually play in the UEFA and Europa League
And Athens is also home to Beta Ethniki (division 2) side Ethnikos Piraeus, who finished fourth in their league last season
5. Madrid, Spain
10 of 15
Last season Real Madrid failed once again to topple unconquerable rivals Barcelona. However, being second fiddle in La Liga is no small feat and no-one can deny theirs is a very strong team of players. With Atletico’s success in the Europa League over Fulham, Madrid drifts easily into the top 5
- Real Madrid is also currently in 2nd place in the league this season
- Atletico Madrid is down in 6th place in the league this season
4. Barcelona, Spain
11 of 15
The home of what many people consider to be the best team in the world and what is certainly the best youth academy in the world, Barcelona is virtually able to make the list on the strength of one team. But the city is home to Espanyol, who are a strong side in its own right, which made it an easy choice for fourth.
- FC Barcelona, who are currently first in La Liga, won it last season and are often called the best team in the world
- Espanyol who were 11th last season and are currently in 5th this season
3. Manchester, England
12 of 15
With vast improvements in the Manchester City Squad over the last year and a half such as star signings as Carlos Tevez, David Silva and Edin Dzeko, City have joined Manchester United at the top of the premier league table, making Manchester a truly formidable city in world football.
- Manchester United are currently in first place in the Premier League, having played a game less than most (which they will make up this week)
- Manchester City are currently in second
2. Milan, Italy
13 of 15
After last year’s success in four competitions for Inter Milan, the city of Milan could never have been far off the top spot. AC Milan taking the top spot in the Italian League this season sealed the deal.
- AC Milan, who are currently in 1st
- Inter Milan, who are currently in 4th
1. London, England
14 of 15
There could really be no question, with London having 3 of the top teams in European competition and controlling many of the top spots in one of the world’s most elite football leagues.
London has 13 League sides, 5 of whom play in the Premier League-
- Arsenal are currently lying in 3rd in the Premier League
- Chelsea are currently lying in 4th in the Premier League, they are also the current champions. They also won the FA Cup last season.
- Tottenham are currently in 5th in the Premier League, these first three are also all participating in the Champions League
- Fulham are in 15th in the Premier League and made it to the UEFA Europa league final last year
- West Ham are in 20th position

Best Non-Capital-City----- Milan, as evidenced in the rest of the list, capital cities, with their larger populations and urban areas tend to make the best football cities. The fact that such a great football culture could progress in a Non-Capital is extremely impressive, especially as it is second only to London.
Biggest City Rivalry- Glasgow’s ‘Old Firm’. There’s no rivalry like that between Rangers and Celtic, pure and simple.
Largest City Wide Commitment to Football- Buenos Aires, 24 Clubs could not survive in any other city in the world, the entire city must be football mad and we should admire their dedication
