First Take Saturday: UGA Wins Ugly, PSU Rolls, and Give it up for the Mormons
All we could talk about before Week 3 of the NCAA College Football Season was THAT Ohio State-USC game.
College Gameday was at USC, and even the commentators couldn't stop referring to "THAT game."
Well, some other schools stole the headlines before the sun went down over California.
Georgia struggled against South Carolina, a team who they lost to. They came away 14-7, but only thanks to a forced fumble with the ball on its own two-yard line and a last-second reception with South Carolina looking like they'd take the game to overtime.
Steve Spurrier must be absolutely fuming. He simply doesn't have the plethora of wide receivers and quarterbacks as he did at Florida.
Shouldn't he be thinking about persuading his AD to try and go return to the ACC? On the basis of this, the Gamecocks will finish bottom of the SEC East.
Maryland knocked off Cal 35-27 on a day when Cal's offense really didn't wake up until the fourth quarter of the game. Because of the sheer badness of the ACC, Maryland looked like they'll be a contender for the Championship Game in Jacksonville this year. Virginia Tech knocked off Georgia Tech...if you still care about the ACC.
Oh, and Illinois, who I thought would beat University of Louisiana-Lafayette by 40 had to rely on an onside kick recovery to stave off the challenge of their rivals. The 24th-ranked Illini may have come away with a 20-17 victory, but no-one's under illusions. Ron Zook's side is simply not the force that it was in 2007.
East Carolina struggled by Tulane 28-24 in one of the games of the week.
Oh, and Oregon might get the prize for the comeback team of the week. Down 20-3 to Purdue and looking terrible, Oregon found themselves (as only football playing hippies can!), and brought the game to overtime in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, they held off the Boilermakers, and won the game 32-26 in overtime thanks to a LaGarrette Blount (what a name!) touchdown for a couple of yards out.
From "Hail Mary".....
Notre Dame made 'Statue Day' for Lou Holtz a memorable one when they destroyed Michigan 35-17 in a game where both sides together managed 600 yards of offense. Notre Dame still aren't "back," but it's a way forward. Oh, and I'm glad for Charlie Weis that he's OK after sustaining a torn ACL when he collided with one of his own players on the sideline.
To "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints...."
And BYU? Wasn't the game against UCLA meant to be a really close one? Well, the Mormons piled it on against UCLA, hammering the Californians 59-0. Special love to BYU quarterback Max Hall, who tied the school record for touchdowns with seven, including SIX in the first half.
Oh, and as for Penn State? They nuked Syracuse 55-13. It was mostly about the back-ups in the second half, which meant that Pat Devlin reinforced my thinking that he's a more accurate quarterback than starter Darryl Clark..
