A Guy Named Ike Ruined College Football Weekend

Dino NicandrosSep 12, 2008

It's Friday, which means one more day to college football Saturday.

You've waited all week to kick back on the couch with the buddies and watch some football, and most of the fans around country will be able to do that without any interference.

The guys in southeast Texas aren't so lucky.

Hurricane Ike is making landfall later tonight, and has thus disrupted college football in the state of Texas.

I was anxious to watch the Longhorns take on their old SWC rivals, Arkansas, this weekend, but ol' Ike had something to say about that.

The threat of the impending hurricane has forced Texas to postpone its game versus Arkansas to Sept. 27, which is Texas' bye week. The game time will be announced at a later time, but it will still be played in Austin.

It was a long week at school. Is it too much to ask for three hours of college football on Saturday? Is it?

I realize there is great game between Ohio State and USC and everyone will be enjoying that, as they should, but when it comes down to watching two schools that I don't have a particular liking for or watching Texas play the 'Hogs of Arkansas, I'd take the Texas game anytime.

Some other schedule changes to Texas schools...

  • The Stanford-TCU game has been moved up because of the storm. The game will be played at 1 p.m. ET in Forth Worth.
  • Air Force's game against Houston has been moved to Gerald J. Ford Stadium at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The game was moved from John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium in Houston.
  • The Washington State-Baylor game has been moved up to Friday night in Waco. The game was originally scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Kickoff is now scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET Friday night.

In all seriousness, this is a very dangerous storm that is affecting hundreds of thousands of people on the Texas coast, and football should not be the primary concern.

To everyone with power in their homes around the country, enjoy college football this weekend. To my brothers in southeast Texas, stay dry and stay safe.
