WWE, Please Do Not Give John Cena Another Royal Rumble Win This Year
Well Bleachers, it is now January 2011, which marks two very special occasions; the beginning of the new year and WWE's 24th Royal Rumble, the first of the Big Four to take place in the year. This year's will take place in Boston.
The Royal Rumble has always been known for its shocks and surprises since the very start of the Pay Per View. For example, RVD making a surprise entry in 2009, Chyna shocking the world by being the first woman to enter the Rumble and Edge returning from an injury months before expected to win 2010's Rumble.
So it is a bit of a big deal.

The Royal Rumble has also been known to either boost the careers of mid-card Superstars or to put an exclamation point on current main eventers, all leading up to that Wrestlemania Moment.
It is around this time of year that predictions get thrown around and people make decisions on who they want to win the Rumble and who they believe will win the Rumble.
Some are plausible, some not so much, but so far, the most common names that are brought up as potential Royal Rumble 2011 winners are Chris Jericho, Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk, John Morrison, Christian and of course, the man this article is centered on, John Cena.
I have no problem with John Cena, the current Mr. WWE. I believe he is a talented individual and puts an unbelievable amount of effort into being the face of the company as well as doing a great job of putting over newer, younger talent verbally and in the ring.
Examples just in 2010 alone are Justin Gabriel, Wade Barrett and Dolph Ziggler, who all shone in the ring whilst wrestling him and Evan Bourne and Daniel Bryan, who Cena has spoken highly of publicly.
So this article will not be bashing the man in any way, but more the booking and direction his character is given.
John Cena is known for being WWE's resident "Superman," the guy who can spend the entire match getting his backside handed to him by his opponent only to come back and win the match out of nowhere with his "Five Moves of Doom."
He is the biggest draw in the company and for that reason, has to look good almost 100% of the time. They couldn't even keep him off of Raw for a week after being "fired"!
At 2008's Royal Rumble, John Cena shocked the world by turning up at Madison Square Garden as the surprise No. 30 entrant and won. However, he did not actually win his WWE title matches.
Cena spent the majority of 2010 being roughhoused by the Nexus and feuded with Wade Barrett for several months.
He came out on top, defeating Barrett in a Chairs match at TLC. On the next Raw and the Smackdown following it, he was attacked by CM Punk who claimed he had had enough of Cena's brutal and dishonest ways.
However, just as a feud with Punk was about to properly begin, following Punk revealing himself as the new leader of the Nexus, Cena was injured at a Raw house show during a cage match against Wade Barrett.
Great timing, huh?
Now, Cena is out of action for an unknown amount of time. While he is supposed to appear at Raw tonight, whether he is actually cleared to compete is unknown.
...Which makes a great opening for an injury return come the Royal Rumble in a few weeks. Which is also in his home state.
While Cena appears to be involved in a program with CM Punk and the rest of Nexus, it is unsure how long it will go on for and whether or not it will carry on until Wrestlemania.
If it doesn't, then the WWE will have all the more reason to throw him into the main event for the WWE title at 'Mania.
It is no secret that the WWE has a lack of star power at the moment, just like it is no secret they are concerned about this. Just the thought of taking Cena off of Raw for more than a week scares them.
This lack of star power means the WWE will have trouble making a great PPV draw for the WWE title.
Yes, they have the youth movement, but I do not think the WWE has enough faith in their newer Superstars to put them in the main event of the Grandest Stage Of Them All just yet.
Just the fact that not one 2010 PPV contained a WWE title match that didn't involve John Cena and/or Randy Orton proves that.
So I would not put it past them to have Cena win the Rumble just to ensure their PPV draws. The "injury return" story makes this all the more possible.
I, unfortunately, do not see this as a good idea in the slightest.
The fact is, John Cena does not need another Royal Rumble win or even a WWE title at this point.
The Royal Rumble is meant to progress careers, right? So please, tell me how Cena winning the Royal Rumble will progress his career?
The thing is, John Cena is at the very top right now, even though he has not held the title in quite a while.
He is still the biggest WWE Superstar and has still done pretty much everything there is for a WWE Superstar to do.
He's been the WWE Champion 7 times, won the World Heavyweight Championship twice, a two time World Tag Team Champion, one time WWE Tag Team Champion, 3 United States Championships on top of winning the Royal Rumble once.
The Intercontinental Championship is pretty much the only active championship gold that has never been in John Cena's hands (that isn't the Divas Championship).
So what would another WWE Championship or even Royal Rumble win do for Cena's career?
To begin with, his injury is not serious, so a massive emotional return wouldn't even be possible.
Secondly, he is still pretty much at the top of career and there is literally no sort of push that can be given to him.
And most of all, a John Cena Royal Rumble win at this stage in his career would just be another prop, another accolade to add to his list and not the massive well-deserved push or career boost that a Royal Rumble win should be.
To make him win would just be a waste, in other words.
This year, somebody else should be given a chance. Somebody who a Royal Rumble win and a Wrestlemania main event would actually benefit fully. Not just another big name that can draw people in. The same goes for Randy Orton winning this year.
It is not a case of Cena or Orton not deserving the big win, but just the issue of neither men actually needing it.
A Royal Rumble win is probably the biggest push a Superstar can get, so why waste it on two men who have been pushed non-stop for years?
While this would have worked years ago, right now, it does not make sense storyline wise and considering the shape of the WWE right now.
The best thing for the WWE to do right now is to give the win to somebody who is not in the main event right now, seeing as they are running low on main-eventers.
Christian winning, for example, sets up for a great feud and 'Mania match with Edge and let's be honest, which would draw more: Cena vs The Miz for the WWE title or Christian vs Edge for the World Heavyweight championship?
Exactly.
Christian is guy who has done it all, but never once received the World Championship he so much deserves. He tore his pectoral muscle mid-2010 and the conditions for him winning this month's Rumble are fantastic.
The current champion is Edge and Superstar return shocks are usually one of the main reasons to watch the Rumble. His win would be the most emotional in years, if not ever.
Other names like a returning Chris Jericho would be great for his career and for a Wrestlemania match, seeing as Jericho can pull a great match out of almost anybody. Before taking time off in 2010, Jericho was falling out of Raw's main-event scene and a win could re-establish him.
Alberto Del Rio, Kofi Kingston, Wade Barrett and Dolph Ziggler (if he doesn't win his WHC match) are also decent choices, as it could cement each of the four men as solid main-eventers.
So come on, when there are so many guys in the locker room, so many names that a Royal Rumble win could do absolute wonders for, why throw it away on someone who is already a big name and solidified main eventer?
Especially at a time when the WWE is running so low on main-event talent to begin with!
I'm going to conclude with this thought:
The Royal Rumble is the best time of the year to create a new star or re-establish one in need of re-establishing. Or even, in several cases in the past, to set up for a massive feud/storyline.
This year, the WWE have GOT to bring support back in, considering the lowering buyrates of their PPVs over the past couple of years.
I implore you, Vince, do not do the obvious and throw the win on Cena as an easy way to make people buy Wrestlemania.
Give us a winner we'll care about, someone with a story. That, is how you draw people in.
