Redemption for Ohio State Football and Cleveland Cavs New Hire Ted Williams

Taveus HawkinsJan 5, 2011

We knew it would happen sooner or later.  We knew we could do it.  It was crazy to ever believe we could not beat an SEC foe in a bowl game.  Well, it finally happened after nine attempts.  Finally, that "gorilla" is off our backs.  Funny thing though; that wasn't even the big news story in Columbus on Wednesday.  In the grand scheme of things Terrelle Pryor, M.O.P. (Most Outstanding Player) and his Buckeye teammates' accomplishments at the Sugar Bowl pale in comparison to what a homeless man with an iconic name did.

Mr. Ted Williams, originally from Brooklyn, New York made us forget all about the beloved Buckeyes for a moment.  Even New York Yankee fans like this Ted Williams.  This homeless man with the "voice of Gabriel" hit the media outlets and internet with the speed and power of a Terrelle Pryor.  In our age of "electronic enlightenment" this man stole our hearts and let us know that "hope springs eternal."  Do you have a gun to your head?  Please don't pull the trigger.  It's going to get better.  "Happy days are here again."

At one time I lived in Columbus and would jump on the expressway right at Mr. Williams' spot at least once a day.  That spot is maybe two miles I guess from The OSU north campus.  To think that this man could possibly go from being homeless one day to having a job with the Cleveland Cavaliers and being a homeowner the next is truly wonderful.  That could only take place today.  I hear Inside Edition, TMZ and everybody vying for his time and attention.  He will be making an appearance on the Today Show tomorrow.

Our Buckeyes fought hard against those Razorbacks.  It was a tough battle.  But I bet Mr. Williams has fought even harder.  I heard him say he has been sober for two years.  That is commendable.  God bless him and I hope his sobriety continues.  I'm sure over his course in life he's lost a few things.  They probably were things that were dear and important to him.  Maybe he feels like he should have had a greater appreciation for those things.  I think all of us have been there before.

I wonder how he feels about our young Buckeyes giving up their memorabilia for tattoos.  I'm sure he'd be willing to forgive just like someone is forgiving him.  He's getting another chance.  He wants an opportunity to redeem himself and he is getting that opportunity today.

I'm truly hoping our young Buckeyes will get that same opportunity.  I'm hoping the NCAA will see the hypocrisy of their actions and allow our Buckeyes to compete without such a stiff penalty next year.  "Come on now.  Five games is somewhat absurd!"  These young men see the error of their ways.  Now is the time for redemption...for Mr. Williams...as well as the Buckeyes.
