Pitt Football: School Should Offer Head Coach's Job To Penn State's Tom Bradley

Dave DeBlasioDec 31, 2010

Pitt chancellor Mark Nordenberg could make his New Year's day 2011 go a lot better if he would pick up the phone and call Tom Bradley, Penn State's unofficial head coach, and offer him the Pitt head coaching job.

I believe Bradley would take the job.

If Nordenberg thinks he can depend on Steve Pederson, Pitt athletic director, to fix a mess of Pederson's own making, Nordenberg is not nearly as intelligent as we think.

By hiring now-incarcerated Mike Haywood to be Pitt's next head coach, Pederson continues to demonstrate his incompetence and overall lack of athletics intelligence.

Remember, he did the same kind of foolishness at Nebraska and almost cost Husker chancellor Harvey Perlman his job before Perlman cut Pederson lose.

Hire Bradley today and all that background noise dissipates into thin air.

Pederson doesn't want Bradley. That fact alone make Bradley's appeal increase.

Character-wise, you can't do better than Tom Bradley. The man has an impeccable record at Penn State.

Recruiting problems will be solved for Pitt in a few weeks. Bradley is a master recruiter in Western Pennsylvania and a popular guy with local coaches.

Pitt needs to make a huge leap of good faith to recover the good will of the high school coaches in Pennsylvania. Those guys loved Dave Wannstedt, didn't have a chance to warm up to Haywood, and are now left in limbo with Haywood's arrest.

What are they going to tell their players? "Gee, we don't know why Pitt got rid of Wannstedt and that new guy, he's in jail. I don't want you even talking to him."

Major problems loom for Pitt if the Pederson-Heywood cluster fuk is not addressed immediately.

Bradley would bring all plusses for the table at Pitt.

Better yet, his hiring would make Pitt's old nemesis Penn State rethink their plans for 2011. Who really believes Joe Paterno is coaching the Penn State football team? For most of the 2010 season Paterno walked around the sidelines looking like he could drop dead at any moment.

Without Bradley on staff, Paterno would seriously need to rethink his exaggerated sense of self-importance. I mean the 84-year old might actually have to coach.

Bradley's hire could be the triple-play Pitt badly needs right now to turn the sudden decline of Pitt football into a rapid ascent.

Nordenberg could kill two birds with one stone here as well: Pederson would probably resign when Nordenberg upstages him by hiring Bradley, the guy Pedeson so arrogantly even refused to interview.

If Pederson didn't resign, Nordenberg would have even more reason to terminate Pitt's pathetic athletic director.

If the A.D. can't support the chancellor's pick for head football coach, there is no reason him to keep the A.D. on staff, right?

This mess could still work out in Pitt's favor - but it all depends on Nordenberg taking charge.
