Ranking the ACC After Week Two of College Football Action
1. Wake Forest (2-0, 0-0)
The Deacons beat an SEC team in Ole Miss, and routed Baylor in Waco. Doesn't sound like much, but in a down ACC, that's plenty.
2. Georgia Tech (2-0, 1-0)
The Jackets did something Saturday that is the mark of really good football teams. They didn't play well and still won a game against a quality opponent. Wait until their offense really starts humming. Jonathan Dwyer is the best running back you've never heard of, but you will soon.
3. Florida State (1-0, 0-0)
Was this 1998 or 2008? Even if it's Western Carolina, 69-0 is impressive. Several ACC teams are struggling with anyone they play, but the 'Noles roll. When they get Wake Forest in two weeks, we'll know more about them.
4. Clemson (1-1, 0-0)
I saw this game today against The Citadel, and the Tigers have major issues along the defensive line. Don't let the score fool you, they gave up over 400 yards of offense...yikes. That said, no ACC team has better skill players, and they have three more weeks of organized scrimmages, against NC State, SC State, and Maryland before the showdown with Wake.
5. Miami (1-1, 0-0)
The Canes showed a little a pride, especially defensively, against the high-powered Gators tonight. The offense is still a mess, but they can do some damage this year.
6. Boston College (1-1, 0-1)
As usual, BC is tough, physical and will be a thorn to ACC teams all season. The problem is, until they solve their red zone problems like they had Saturday, the Eagles can't truly be considered a contender in the ACC.
7. Virginia Tech (1-1, 0-0)
The loss to ECU doesn't look so bad now, but only 24-7 against Furman, and it was tight late? As has become their MO in recent years, if you want to get the Hokies, get them early. Next week against the Jackets could be the season for Beamer's bunch.
8. UNC (1-0, 0-0)
The Tarheels are only here because they haven't lost, but barely beating McNeese St. last week doesn't impress anyone.
9. Duke (1-1, 0-0)
You know the Dukies are going to upset a team or two in the ACC. David Cutcliffe has them playing hard, and if they had pulled out the Northwestern game, they'd really be excited in Durham.
10. UVA (1-1, 0-0)
Bottom three in the ACC could have a pillow-fight tournament. Up 3-0 against the vaunted Richmond Spiders, the Cavs pull away for 16-0 win. Ooh yeah...by the way, the USC Trojans are awesome, and made UVA look like a high school team.
11. Maryland (1-1, 0-0)
Remember when Ralph Friedgen was the nation's hottest assistant at GT? Great football mind, too bad he can't recruit. Cut your losses, Terps, his best days are behind him.
12. NC State (1-1, 0-0)
A 34-point loss to the mighty Gamecocks of South Carolina, then a struggle with William and Mary. Maybe if they just play Mary, they might win by a couple of touchdowns. They are bad—really bad.
