Qatar Soccer Federation's Alleged 2022 World Cup Bid Corruption

Sal DeRoseDec 7, 2010

So if you're an American right now, you're probably feeling really good. Qatar's 2022 World Cup bid allegedly needed some greased palms.

Qatar outright won the 2022 FIFA World Cup on December 2nd in a final round vote over the United States. Outrage ensued from many U.S. soccer homers, wondering how a country smaller than Connecticut won the World Cup bid over the United States. Then came the comments alleging corruption.

I was outraged that Qatar won, and knew they would need to undergo a huge overhaul of their own country. The need to change a country that small would cost a ton of money. Qatar needs to triple the size of their airport and build nine new stadiums. By the way, it's really hot in Qatar. The temperatures can reach as high as 122 degrees in the summer.

But now Qatar has some explaining to do. Why are there reports that the Qatar Soccer Federation allegedly gave $78 million to the Argentine FA for support from FIFA executive committee member Julio Grundona? They also need to explain how two more FIFA executive committee members somehow were paid $1.5 million for their votes.

If this turns out to be true, the validity of the vote for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups will be called into question. Russia won the 2018 World Cup over heavily favored England, who were promised seven votes but ended up receiving two and got knocked out in the first round.

Qatar's bid is starting to smell a little fishy. Out of the 12 proposed stadiums, six will be in the capital of Doha. All of these stadiums will be air conditioned according to the bid by Qatar, another huge obstacle that they must overcome.

Also, the minor problem of Qatar's national team will be a problem as, come qualifying time, teams will miss the tournament to them, who auto-qualifies despite being ranked so lowly. As of right now, Qatar is ranked 113th in the FIFA rankings.

Qatar can pull this off no question. They have the money to do such a large project. But, the question here should be whether this bid was another part of FIFA's corruption scandals?
