Champions League Group A: Inter and Tottenham Are Fighting For The First Spot

Jan StarrDec 6, 2010

Twente - Tottenham, Kickoff Time 20:45 CET

Jenas should be fit to play for Tottenham, although it may be unlikely that Spurs will risk him when they have already qualified for the next stage, although the first and second positions are still in contention.

However, simply getting this far is a pretty good achievement for Spurs, considering that their Premiership performances haven’t always been quite as good as their European ones this season. Tottenham are still missing the eternally injured and instrumental (when he’s playing) Van de Vaart.

In theory, judging by form this match should be a no brainer and the away side should have the edge. Manager Redknapp is hoping that his team will finish top of the group, although his commitment to the competition may be tested slightly and we’ll only be able to tell just how much he wants to follow through with this cup run when we see the Spurs starting line up.

FC Twente have had a disappointing run in the Champions League; on the bright side however, they are going to have the advantage of making it into the Europa League, assuming that Werder Bremen don’t make up the seven goal deficit that they have in terms of goal difference and lets face it that is pretty unlikely.

Werder Bremen - Inter Milan, Kickoff Time 20:45 CET

Werder Bremen are not having a good season—only 10th in the league after having a much worse start, they are going out of the Champions League early and they are likely going to end things on a low note, bombing out in bottom place and not even grabbing a spot in the Europa League.

They haven’t even managed to win a single match since being in the competition this season. If they are very lucky, they may be able to salvage some pride with a win here, although Inter are playing to qualify first and have an easier ride through to the knock out stages.

Inter Milan are underperforming domestically and in this competition. Benitez is once again under a great deal of pressure; his side, which was successful when he inherited it from Mourinho, has only won one match in their last six matches at home and are not looking like anything, but a shadow of the side that they were just 12 months ago.

Considering their current form, a draw would probably be a reasonable result, although it will be another matter whether or not the fans see things that way.
