Greg Davis: Fired Or Not, Texas Longhorns Need To Rethink Their Offense
Greg Davis—is he or isn't he?
Fired or not?
Reports are swirling that University of Texas head coach Mack Brown has fired his longtime offensive coordinator. The Dallas Morning News reported that as of late Thursday afternoon, Davis had not been fired.
Whatever happens to Davis, there is one thing for sure: the University of Texas does need to rethink and revamp its offense.
After what amounts to an embarrassing 5-7 season, the Longhorns will not be in a bowl game for the first time in 20 years and that's simply not acceptable in Austin.
Davis has been with Brown for 16 years, going back to their days at Tulane and the University of North Carolina.
This mess in Austin looks a lot like what happened at Florida State when Bobby Bowden made the decision to bring in Jimbo Fisher as the FSU "coach in waiting." That did not work out very well for Bowden; it worked fine for Fisher.
Will Muschamp, the Longhorn defensive coordinator, has a similar deal and is supposed to be the in-house heir to Brown. It would be interesting to see how he feels about the offense and when he might actually take over the program.
At the end of the day, Texas has no excuse to not be an elite program, a flagship program, if you will. Texas is packed with high school talent and UT typically has its pick of the litter.
But with the departure of Colt McCoy, this year's offense turned out to be a Texas-size flop.
Perhaps Mack Brown might want to make a quick call to Florida's Urban Meyer. Meyer's team had offensive problems as well this season yet there is no clamoring for any changes in Gatorland as of yet.
The pressure is on Brown. Some strong voices out there have said that if Brown doesn't get rid of Davis, then perhaps Brown is the one who needs to call it a day.
Surely Muschamp wouldn't be heartbroken if Brown suddenly decided to step down.
So what's the answer?
What could happen is that Davis is "reassigned" somewhere on the staff or elsewhere in the athletic department. When someone's been with you for 16 years, they're not going to be thrown out the door.
That leaves running backs coach Major Applewhite as a possible new offensive coordinator.
Brown could also look outside the program but that would appear a longshot.
Whatever happens, the Eyes of Texas are literally on Brown.
And he's got to do something about it.
