Top 10 Stories Of The Weekend: Week 3
1. Paul Ince must feel like he has been robbed. How did West Ham end up beating Blackburn 4-1? A disallowed goal, a saved penalty by Robert Green, and some very good chances, plus conceding twice in injury time led to a very misleading score line. It should really have been closer.
2. David and Goliath get it going for Portsmouth. Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe played well in a impressive 3-0 win over Everton. Jermain Defoe's sublime chip did cross the line and should be awarded to him, now that it has been made clear. Slightly unlucky for Crouch who is still yet to score for Pompey this season.
3. Spot-kick Saturday! Keepers take the headlines as Stewart Downing, Yakubu and Jason Roberts all failed from the spot. Robin Van Persie, however nailed his spot-kick for Arsenal, against last week's goalkeeping hero Shay Given.
4. After their disastrous start to the season so far, Spurs will be absolutely delighted to take a point away from Stamford Bridge. That, combined with the end of the transfer window signings of Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka, might help Juande Ramos get his side back on track.
5. Newcastle had better get their act together after a 3-0 drubbing from Arsenal that really should have been five or six. The addition of 22-year-old striker Xisco from Spanish side Deportivo may be welcome news to Kevin Keegan.
6. Should Joey Barton be playing in the Premier League? It seems he gets chance after chance to redeem himself but I doubt he will learn from his mistakes of the past. The FA should do everyone a favour and suspend the thug! I suspect we have not seen the last of Barton in trouble, as long as he continues to play.
7. Stoke were desperately unlucky. They deserved at least a point from their game with Middlesbrough after fighting back to 1-1 with ten men, but things don't always go your way in the Premier League—as Gareth Southgate found out last week against Liverpool.
8. Shaun Wright-Phillips is back to being one of the biggest fish in a smaller pond and doing what he does best—he must be wishing he had never left Man City. More good news for Man City fans as Abu Dhabi Investment Group (ADUG) have reached a deal to takeover the club. Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim will be the man in charge. A real good weekend for City fans!
9. Aston Villa v Liverpool was the possibly dullest game of the season (I don't want to sit through too many that are worse than that!). A very poor effort from Liverpool who set up defensively and played Robbie Keane out of position. Fernando Torres was taken off after sustaining what looked to be a hamstring strain. I doubt he will be available for Spain’s World Cup qualifiers this week and next.
10. Hull had better develop a Premier League sense of bounce-back-ability because 0-5 defeats at home to Wigan aren’t good for morale. Although Amr Zaki looks a very good buy for the Latics.
