South Park, Cleveland's Nike Ad and the Best LeBron James Spoofs

Jesse DorseyNov 9, 2010

LeBron James's recent Nike ad has been equally praised and criticized, and has been spoofed so hard it's been like the Double Rainbow Guy and the Bed Intruder Guy had a baby who was left outside and got covered in Chocolate Rain, bit Charlie's finger and went on to make a Nike commercial.

Now this has left me with only one question.

What should I do?

Should I write a bit about how LeBron has tainted his legacy?

Should I just drop it and move on?

What should I do?

Should I just be happy and watch the Cavs?

They are the Cavs!

Or should I slow down, take a look at the best spoofs on the ad, share them with you guys and have a good, innocent laugh?

Should I give out awards for the best LeBron James Nike Ad spoofs?

I think I'll choose that one.

The Video in Queston

1 of 6

First, we must take a look at the video. Let's break it down.

It is choppy, so a spoofer can easily cut in his or her own scenes easily to pair with LeBron's incessant "What should I do's."

It is simple, with little to no effects, and is really nothing more than a close-up of one person the whole time, so really anyone with a camera can spoof it.

The commercial has already made its rounds, and is familiar with a good chunk of the country, so everyone could relate to it.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about it that is either, it is great or it is terrible, so people will have an opinion of your spoof, good or bad.

It is easily copied, noticeable and a bit goofy, making it ripe for a good spoofing.

Lamest Spoof: Michelle Beadle

Sorry Michelle.
Sorry Michelle.

Sorry Michelle, I have pretty much enjoyed your involvement on Sports Nation and have appreciated that you side with Cleveland in the LeBron James decision, but this is not one of your best works.

It is a boring, unfunny spoof, and has very little substance.

I really don't think it has anything going for it.

Oh, and that doughnut is totally orange.

Most Unexpected Spoof: Lee Fisher, U.S. Senate Candidate

3 of 6

It's cheesy, so automatically I love it.

Lee Fisher put out this ad as a last ditch effort to win the U.S. Senate seat up for grabs in Ohio.

Aside from that, it takes something that absolutely nobody likes (political attack ads) and makes it hilarious and goofy.

Fisher takes time to both wag a finger at LeBron, while trying to give the finger to his opponent.

Unfortunately for Fisher, when he asked "What should I do?" the people responded with a vehement, "Not be our representative" as Fisher got dismantled by Republican candidate Rob Portman.

At least he has time to work on his basketball slapping skills now.

Best Animated Spoof: South Park

Waring: Dirty language!
Waring: Dirty language!

South Park did what South Park does best.

They took what was happening in the world, turned around and made fun of it in their show a week later.

Their ability to put together shows on the fly has made them last as long as they have, and it gave them a fan base that will be dedicated for years to come.

Oh, and they just made everyone in Ohio who wasn't a fan before a fan with that episode, and they may have been the hardest on LeBron, although they did do it with subtlety.

Best Ad Starring Dan Patrick: Dan Patrick's Ad

5 of 6

Dan Patrick made a similar decision in 2007 as LeBron James did this summer, he left ESPN as one of Sportscenter's most recognizable anchors, turning his back on all of his fans from his native Mason, Ohio, to become a free agent.

He then took his talents to NBC and is part of their Football Night in America and is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated and has been in a handful of movies since the departure.

Patrick's ad is witty, and brings back someone who we don't see enough of anymore in the sports world.

Best Parody: Cleveland's Response Video

6 of 6

This is the ultimate response video to LeBron's ad.

It is funny, controversial and real.

The video perfectly reflects the majority of the opinion of a whole state, and is real people getting their feelings off their chest in a more level-headed way than burning jerseys.

It showed that the city felt betrayed and offended by The Decision, and the people want LeBron to know exactly what they think of him, regardless of the criticism they get from the rest of the world for either A) taking sports too seriously, or B) treating LeBron like a slave.

Most importantly, it tells him that The Decision was not okay, and he did ruin his legacy, at least to the state.

It then turns his words back on him, throwing in a clip in which he says, "...and I wont stop till I get it (a championship for Cleveland)."

So what do you think?

What should I do?

Should I go back to writing about things that actually relate to something happening on a court/field/rink/pitch?

What should I do?

Should I go study for my finals?

Seriously, what should I do?
