BCS: The Completely Flawed Logic of the Worst System in Sports

Adam WellsNov 9, 2010

Today, on Dan Patrick's National Radio show, Bill Hancock, executive director of the BCS, was a guest and he was trying his best to defend the merits of the BCS.

This was Hancock's second appearance on the show; the first time he was on, he famously said that he would "Congratulate them on a great season", regarding an undefeated team that would get to compete in a bowl game but not have a chance to play for the national title because of this system.

In today's interview, he said that the BCS was not about money, but it was about putting the two best teams against each other. This statement got a HUGE laugh from me because we all know that this system was implemented as a means to draw more money for the NCAA.

Also, he continued to emphasize the importance of the regular season in college football while bringing up how no one cared about college basketball's regular season starting this week (for the record, I didn't know until I saw highlights this morning).

You can't compare football and basketball in this country. Football is by far the most popular sport in this country; the NFL ratings are better than most network television shows, and college football's ratings are not that far behind.

Do the people that run the BCS think that if a playoff system is implemented that the attendance at these games will drop dramatically? Do they think that television ratings, and therefore advertising dollars, are going to fall off a cliff? Do they think that College Gameday will stop going to these campuses and hyping up that week's games?

Does the NFL suffer because of a playoff system? No, in fact it helps the NFL as the culmination of their season regularly draws in 100 million viewers.

This argument against the playoff and for the BCS by people like Bill Hancock is completely illogical and it robs us, the viewers and consumers, of something that we all know would be far more interesting for college football.

For those who say that there is a bowl system which gives other schools something to hang their hat on, that shows ignorance of the situation that is going on. These smaller bowl games were created to appease the "smaller schools" while making sure that the "big boys" got to hang on to all the money and the glory that goes with the Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and Fiesta Bowl.

Though to be fair, the Fiesta Bowl has stepped out and brought in some smaller teams to give them a chance.

Thankfully, there are teams like Boise State and TCU that have come along and developed prestigious programs and are doing everything that they can to throw a monkey wrench into this completely flawed and corrupt system.

Here's hoping that Auburn and Oregon fall, giving a National Title game with Boise and TCU just to stick it to the system.
