FAIL: Five Matches That Should've Went The Other Way.
Recently, I took time to read A.Version 2.0's slideshow on huge mistakes by the WWE. Pure brilliance, but hey, it's A.M. Expect no less. Speaking of A.M. we recently had a difference in opinion on some matches in WWE's past.
While I won't go into specific details because of it's inclusion in this slideshow, I questioned the usual WWE "put over". Basically when a Veteran star allows a younger star to pin him in a big match situation. Some may not understand my definition of a put over.
Like Sheamus vs John Cena last year. Wasn't exactly a putover since Cena fell through the table, without any interaction from Sheamus. I don't consider that a clean win at all. Sheamus title defenses and wins following that is exactly why.
He became a "paper" champion.
As a longtime WWE Fan, I've seen a lot of matches that should've went the "other" way. Some of the guy's were not ready to step up at the time. Waisted time for WWE.
On the other hand, the decisions by Creative were very unintelligent. Leading to a series of mistakes by Management.
I don't want to give all my points in the intro so first up...
Summerslam 2002: Brock Lesnar Vs The Rock
1 of 5
Brock Lesnar was on a rocket ship to the top of the WWE. The Rock was arguably their biggest star at the time. Lesnar had only been on television for a few months, but WWE foolishly handed him the Undisputed Championship.
Stone Cold Steve Austin would agree with me. You actually thought having Lesnar defeat the Rock was the original plan? Not at all.
Austin himself was planned to take the loss from Lesnar. Austin quickly turned down the idea stating having a star of his magnitude lose to a rookie would make him look "weak". Also that Lesnar wouldn't have the proper stage to defeat him.
Frankly, I couldn't agree more. The Rock was never the same in my eyes. After his loss to Lesnar, I stopped watching WWE for months, and was further disgusted when Lesnar beat Taker in his match, Hell in a Cell.
Yeah, I know Rock was on his way out. But did it benefit Lesnar any? Not for long.
In the end, he left the WWE less than two years after claiming the title. Leaving many fans angered and disappointed. It happens when WWE pushes a Superstar to hard. Another example of this, Bobby Lashley.
Summerslam 2004: Randy Orton Vs Chris Benoit
2 of 5
Hear me out Creatures of the Night.
This was undoubtedly one of the most shocking ends to a match in WWE history. A Top Face beaten cleanly by a mid card Heel. What are the odds?
While this may have seemed like a great idea to me at the time, it turned out bad because of another man's selfishness. Orton was always destined for greatness, but Benoit was on the run of his career. He beat HHH, Kane, HBK, and tons of others in his championship reign.
He was the best at the time. Having a mid carder like Orton take that from him cleanly wasn't that bad considering Evolution was becoming more and more predictable. Unlike the Rock, Benoit hadn't had seven reigns as WWE Champion, he was only on his first when he put Orton over.
Yeah, so Orton became the Youngest World Champion in history. But what happened 28 days later? He lost it all, and Triple H resumed his place as the Top Guy on Raw. Selfish.
A short reign for Randy. Benoit dropped back down to the Mid Card. HHH is the only person that benefited from this match. Orton went on to lose to Triple H a few more times. Lost to Undertaker at WM. Didn't win the WWE Title again until 2007.
Benoit resumed his place as a permanent mid carder.
and they say Triple H isn't selfish. ha.
Wrestlemania 23: Shawn Michaels Vs John Cena
3 of 5
All the Cena fans, this isn't exactly a stab at Cena.
Shawn Michaels had been on a hell of a role heading into WM. Personally, I was excited because I figured HBK as WWE Champ again would be a breath of fresh air. Creative foolishly had other plans. This being one of the main reasons Cena is so unpopular among the IWC now.
Considering Cena beat HHH the year before, he headlined the last two Wrestlemania's. Winning both. Why not change things up? Exactly.
This match began what would be a typical John Cena match. Getting beat down the majority of the match. Even dropped with a few finishers. But somehow, rally's back with the STF or AA to win the match. Establishing him as SuperCena.
Hate to see what they've done to him. From there Cena beat Great Khali, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton and five former World Champions at Night of Champions. It actually took an injury for them to stop pushing John Cena.
To fans that always wanted to know the planned ending for John Cena vs Randy Orton at No Mercy 2007. Another John Cena victory..
He just had to beat the Greatest Wrestler of all time huh?
Wrestlemania 26: Edge Vs Chris Jericho
4 of 5
This match was a matter of circumstance from the beginning. Shawn Michaels was retiring. The most anticipated rematch in Pro Wrestling History didn't need a World Title on the line. So the World Title was put on Y2J, while Edge won the Royal Rumble.
The two were in a tag team, until Edge was injured in a match with Jeff Hardy. Y2J had some cruel words for his former partner, calling him injury prone and washed up. Edge vowed revenge and that he would return better than ever.
Everything kind of fell in place. But the ending was the only flaw in the plan. A flaw that left numerous problems in the following months. Y2J beating Edge waisted the Royal Rumble win. For the third year in a row.
Edge still didn't have a title reign lasting over three months. They would instead let Jack Swagger cash in his MITB WAY to early. Pushing Jack to fast, and his World Title reign ended at a few months, and was overall mediocre.
That lead to another Rey Mysterio World Title reign. Which was plagued by Rey being "injured" and Swagger looking weak in the eyes of fans. He was pushed back down to the mid cards. Mysterio's reign didn't last longer than a month.
and to think, most of this could've been avoided with Edge winning at Mania.
Summerslam 2005: Shawn Michaels Vs Hulk Hogan
5 of 5
Creatures of the Night. Even Legends say this match should've went the other day. Roddy Piper himself folks.
HBK vs the Hulkster. The Greatest Wrestler vs The Biggest Draw. Hulk Hogan was sporadically appearing on WWE Television. He left the WWE in the 90s. While Shawn Michaels was rising up from the mid card. Creating one of the most illustrious careers in Pro Wrestling History.
While Hogan was continuing on with the NWO. When he wasn't injured that is.
Hogan hadn't lost many matches since his return to the WWE in 2002. Besides losses from Kurt Angle, Undertaker, and Brock Lesnar, Hogan was practically undefeated. He was leaving the WWE after the match. What was the reason for his win?
They turned Shawn Michaels heel for the first time in years just for this match. HBK made this match watchable. But like Cena does now, Hogan rallied back with the "devastating" leg drop for the win. HBK was turned heel for no apparent reason. Also remember, HBK was 5-0 at Summerslam before losing to Hogan.
He turned face after the match was over anyway. The win certainly didn't do anything for Hogan. Besides proving he doesn't like putting other's over. Basically pandering to the Crowd. The same can be said for Hulk's match against Randy Orton.
The Legend Killer dethroned Benoit as the World Champion. But he can't beat a 100 year old man? That's Creative for you.
