Oregon No. 1 in BCS Week 10 Standings: Reaction and Predictions
Once again, the BCS Standings have taken an interesting turn.
It is looking more and more likely that one-loss teams such as Alabama will not be in the hunt for the BCS Championship.
If any of the remaining undefeated teams suffer a loss, they will plummet in the rankings—Michigan State and Missouri, for example. These were two of the hottest teams entering the weekend.
People had their reservations about these two teams throughout the season. Their upsets proved doubters right, and thus they tumbled down the mountain.
Oddly enough, neither Ohio State nor Alabama fell as far from their top perch when they lost.
Missouri fell to No. 12 while Michigan State fell all the way to No. 14, behind Stanford. It’s a bit funny how far they fell since they both received so much praise a week ago.
Oregon’s big win over USC allowed them to leapfrog Heisman candidate Cam Newton’s Auburn Tigers.
The poll is clearly taking strength of schedule into account.
It doesn’t make sense for Oregon to leapfrog Auburn. Although Oregon won convincingly against USC, and I agree that they are the overall best team, Auburn was just No. 1 and put up 51 points on the road in the SEC.
Both teams did what was asked of them, yet Auburn dropped a spot.
Clearly two of the stronger teams in the nation, these two should fight for the top spots of the BCS Rankings for the remainder of the season.
It will come down to the final week, however, when Auburn plays Alabama in what will be one of the best games of the season.
That leaves Boise State and TCU fighting for No. 3.
Both of these teams do everything they need to move up in the rankings, but will continue to be overlooked. It is a shame they may not get their chance to shine, as I expect both to remain undefeated.
TCU's performance this week was more dominant than Boise State’s, which is what caused them to move ahead. TCU’s defense only giving up six points was most likely the deciding factor for the jump.
I fully expect TCU to beat Utah, its biggest upcoming obstacle, and win out. Same goes for Boise State, whose toughest opponent is Nevada on Nov. 26.
Both of these teams would make for an exciting championship game, but it is difficult to see the BCS putting them over Oregon and Auburn as long as those teams win out.
Really, any pairing of the top four teams would make for two of the most exciting games all season. Alabama may have the star power, but there is a lot of intrigue to any of the potential pairings of Oregon, Auburn, Boise State and TCU.
One thing for sure: It’s good to see new faces fighting for the BCS Championship.
