Dallas Cowboys Season Is Officially Over: Where Does Jerry Jones Go From Here?

Jerry MurphyOct 26, 2010

Now that the Cowboys’ season is officially over (it was actually over after the Viking loss), where does Jerry Jones go from here?

As a true Cowboys fan, I’m actually hoping he sells the team, buys a remote, faraway island, and moves there, never to be seen or heard from again. After all, if you can afford to build a $1.2 billion stadium, you can afford an island. I’m just saying.

Anyway, if I have to listen to one more sound byte from him after a game, a chore usually reserved for head coaches, I’m going to go Mel Gibson on someone.

It isn’t bad enough that he has allowed this season to transpire as it has; we also have to listen to him analyze it. I, for one, have had enough.

Okay, I’m off my soapbox. Now the real article begins.

Everyone knows what’s coming (at least we better know); Wade Phillips (and hopefully his partner in football crime Jason Garrett) will be gone. The question is, when? And then, who?

A horrible thought occurred to me last night as I was watching Tony Romo on the sideline wearing a sling and a scowl: Jerry Jones would actually give the Dynamic Duo of Dallas Destruction a pass on this season now that Romo is out. It can’t possibly be their fault, they lost their starting quarterback. I can hear him now.

How fitting would that be? This is obviously the most talent-laden team with a .167 winning percentage this far into a season in the history of sports. I am so sure of that I am not even going to research it.

Discipline and accountability are sorely missing from this team. For example, when Romo went down in the second quarter of Monday’s game, the score was 10-7 Cowboys. By the time they were given his injury diagnosis, they were down 21-20 (still in the second quarter, by the way). That’s when they quit for good.

The offense was going to be out of sync for a while. Bringing in a guy who never gets any first-team reps, it’s to be expected. This is where the defense needed to turn up the heat. Instead, they made Eli Manning look like his big brother, Peyton.

After harassing Manning into two early turnovers, and causing a fumble on another possession, it was like someone flipped a switch. Any NFL coach worth his salt would not have allowed this to happen. If anything, they should have been p----d off and gone after the Giants with guns blazing.

But, as usual, they only used those guns to shoot themselves in the foot. Why is it a coach (or in this case, coaches) can keep his job while we witness failure after failure? Romo’s gone, the season’s gone, let’s move on (hey, I think there’s a country song there somewhere).

The question is, where does Jerry turn? For starters, hopefully he turns and looks into a mirror and realizes he is not a coach, GM or whatever it is he thinks he is. Upon this realization, hopefully he turns into a tactician and a disciplinarian.

Obviously, the name Cowher comes to mind. I had heard in recent weeks that he was interested in the Giants' job should it become available. However, as long as they keep winning, I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Insert silver lining reference here. The Giants’ success could lead to their retaining the services of Tom Coughlin for at least another year. That leaves Cowher on the market. Imagine that, Giant wins benefiting the Cowboys.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I think I’m going to root for the Giants for the rest of the year (and for Jerry to find that mirror). That’s how desperate I am for a real coach. Luckily for me, I not only love the Cowboys, but I love football. I have plenty of season left to enjoy.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to wash my fingers out with soap after the blasphemy they just typed above (I feel so dirty now).
