BCS Standings Week 9: 10 Teams The BCS Got Wrong

Brandon GalvinOct 25, 2010

Each week the BCS Standings has experienced a shake up because it seems no team wants to keep that No. 1 slot.

Still, it’s not always the No. 1 spot that gets college football fans riled up.

Throughout the top 25 people will find reasons as to why one team should be moved up or down the rankings.

Here are 10 teams the BCS got wrong in this week’s rankings, not where they should be ranked.

10. Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies have impressed me since their close loss to Boise St. in Week 1.

I might be inclined to put them inside the top 20, but at the very least, their dominant performances should rank them higher than No. 23.

With five games of 40 or more points, Tyrod Taylor is getting it done for the Virginia Tech offense. He has 18 total touchdowns and over 2,100 total yards.

9. South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina got back on track after losing a heart-breaker last week.

This is the team that upset Alabama, yet they only rank No. 20.

Steve Spurrier is still one of the better college coaches in the game and I believe his team deserves more respect than they are given in the rankings.

At 5-2 and having that upset under their belts, I’ll give the Gamecocks more respect by suggesting they should be ranked higher than 20th.

8. Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas has been quite dominant this season. But, they let me down against Alabama as I predicted them to win.

Still, they came close.

Unfortunately, they let me down again against Cam Newton’s Auburn Tigers.

I continue to put my faith in Ryan Mallett, who I believe is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Each week, because of Mallett, I give them a chance to win and feel they deserve a bit more respect in the rankings.

7. Utah Utes

Although the Utes have clearly been dominant and I didn’t think they would pull out the Week 1 win against Pittsburgh, I’m not ready to put them in the top 10, despite their record.

I’m also doing a bit of foreshadowing for not wanting to keep Utah in the top 10.

I believe that TCU, one of my top five teams, will bring the Utes down to Earth in two weeks.

For now, I do respect what Utah has done and understand why they are in the top 10. I just don’t see it continuing.

6. Oklahoma Sooners

Even though I believe Ryan Broyles is arguably the best wide out in the nation, the Sooners have not impressed me as much as I thought they would this season.

I think they may be a couple of spots too high.

They have not been overly dominant and also lost to Missouri this past weekend. The running game disappeared when they needed that balance of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Broyles more than anything else Week 8.

5. Ohio St. Buckeyes

It seems to happen to just about every top team this year.

Somehow, some way, these top teams find a way to lose one week and their entire season seems to crumble before them.

Alabama didn’t deserve to drop as far as they did when they lost, in my opinion.

It will be difficult to convince me that Ohio St., with Terrelle Pryor and Jim Tressel, deserves to be No. 11.

Any given week I’d put them as a top seven team, easily. They are too dangerous and experienced to be outside the top 10.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide

It's tough to bet against Nick Saban on any given week.

The defending champions lost a few weeks ago but stayed in the top 10, unlike Ohio State.

I’d rank Alabama higher than the seventh spot for the amount of talent the team has. I would believe in them over almost any other team each week with the coaching staff and experienced play makers on the squad.

3. Auburn Tigers

8 of 10

I liked Auburn to beat LSU as I believe Cam Newton is just fantastic.

Through just eight games he has rushed for 1,077 yards, making him the single season SEC rushing leader.

He has 14 rushing touchdowns while adding 13 touchdowns through the air.

As much as I like the potential Heisman winner, I’m not ready to put his team as the No. 1 team in the entire nation.

They certainly could end up there, but I can’t put them above my No. 1 and No. 2 teams just yet.

2. Boise St. Broncos

9 of 10

Until further notice, the Broncos will continue to be my No. 2 team in the nation.

They have been too overwhelming for most of their opponents over the past calendar year. Kellen Moore is one of the most effective quarterbacks in the game.

They’ll once again show on Tuesday that they are still overlooked and deserve a lot of praise around the nation.

1. Oregon Ducks

Arguably the most dominant team this season, I don’t see how the BCS doesn’t put them No. 1.

They’re 7-0 and absolutely destroying the competition.

No team has come remotely close to touching the Ducks.

I think this week will be an interesting test for them, traveling to USC.

Perhaps another beat down will lead the BCS to finally give the Ducks the praise they deserve in the standings.
