Heisman Trophy Watch: Top 10 Contenders
These Heisman rankings seem to change every week.
Take Denard Robinson, for example—one week the guy is a lock to win the coveted trophy, and the next week he's barely in the conversation. So expect these rankings to change as the season goes forward. But after eight weeks, this is how it stands.
Here are your 10 top contenders to win the Heisman Trophy in 2010.
Cam Newton
1 of 10
The junior quarterback rushed for 217 yards in Auburn's win over LSU on Saturday, which gave Newton the single-season record for a quarterback. He has 14 touchdowns on the ground, and another 13 through the air, with only five interceptions.
If Auburn wins out, you can expect to see Newton holding up the bronze trophy at the end of the season.
Kellen Moore
2 of 10
Moore is the nation's most efficient passer, and despite spending most fourth quarters on the sideline, he still has the numbers to back up his efficiency, namely 16 touchdowns to only one interception.
It's been a long time since anyone outside a BCS school won the award, but Moore is certainly deserving.
LaMichael James
3 of 10
James rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon last Thursday against UCLA. On the year he's rushed for 971 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has a TD through the air.
Like Newton, his chances at winning the award depend on his team's success.
Andrew Luck
4 of 10
Stanford's quarterback is the third at his position to make the list. Luck has thrown for at least two touchdown passes in six of his last seven games and has thrown for 19 total TDs with only five interceptions. His 165.4 passer rating is also one of the best in the country.
Terrelle Pryor
5 of 10
Pryor's chances at the award took a severe hit after his team's loss to Wisconsin last week. But the Buckeye gunslinger has still thrown for 1,775 yards and 18 touchdowns on the season. He has also added three scores on the ground. Pryor ripped Purdue for 270 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday.
DeMarco Murray
6 of 10
Murray passed 1969 Heisman Trophy winner Steve Owens for the most touchdowns in Oklahoma history against Iowa State two weeks ago with 58. He has 14 total touchdowns this season.
Like Pryor, his team's loss hurts. But Murray definitely warrants a look.
Denard Robinson
7 of 10
Robinson has had a rough few weeks, including a three-interception game against Michigan State. But Robinson has 18 total touchdowns, and has threatened defenses with both his arm and his legs.
Justin Blackmon
8 of 10
The Oklahoma State wide receiver is flying under the radar, but he has 62 receptions for 1,112 yards and 14 touchdowns. Blackmon is averaging almost two touchdowns a game.
Those are ridiculous stats, no matter who you are.
Patrick Peterson
9 of 10
The LSU cornerback is the best defensive player in the game. He already had two interceptions in 2010 while also being one of the best run-stoppers in the game.
If it had to go to a defensive player, Peterson would be a lock.
Mark Ingram
10 of 10
Ingram won the award as a sophomore last year, but injuries have limited him in 2010. Despite the injuries, Ingram has still shown flashes of greatness.
He still has a few more big games to prove himself.
