Georgia Football: Offense Looks To Put up Big Numbers Against Kentucky

Brian JonesOct 21, 2010

What’s great about the SEC is that there is never a dull moment, and UGA is no exception.

Before the Bulldogs games against Tennessee and Vanderbilt, people were calling for Mark Richt’s head and wanting to start from scratch. Now, they are only a half game out of the SEC East lead and part of the reason is the offense playing as good of football as any team in the conference the last two weeks.

However, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are not the SEC elite and the Bulldogs were playing at the friendly confines of Sanford Stadium. Can they put the same performance against a Kentucky team that is coming off one of their biggest wins in recent memory when they defeated South Carolina last Saturday?

By the way the Wildcats have been playing defensively over the past three games, one would think Georgia has a legitimate shot of doing some damage because over those last three games they have allowed 32 points per game and for the season, they have allowed 30 points per game which ranks 89th in the country and next-to-last in the SEC.

That said, Georgia has to do its part and not turn the ball over. That’s the main reason they were able to score over 40 points in the last two games and if they continue to not make mistakes such as interceptions and fumbles, they should score at least 30 in the game Saturday.

For the offense to be able to score a lot of points against Kentucky, it starts and ends with QB Aaron Murray who is having a great freshman year. His passing efficiency, 157.2, ranks fifth in the conference and 18th in the nation.

He is also third in the conference in total yards with 258.7 and has been named SEC Freshman of the Week for the last two games.

But in order for Murray to be effective, the running game has to continue what they have been doing the last two games. Washaun Ealey had his best game of the season last week, rushing for 123 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. He will have to carry the load again as Caleb King will be suspended for the contest.

But the most valuable piece has to be WR A.J. Green.

Despite Georgia putting up over 40 points the last two games, they have been at home and they have not had near the same production on the road and part of the reason is Green has been missing in action the first four games of the year due to being suspended.

He came back when the Bulldogs traveled to Colorado and almost won the game for UGA by himself with 119 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches. If Murray is able to find Green early and often, then it’s going to be a long day for the 'Cats.

This game is a crucial one for the Bulldogs. In order for them to win, they have to score a lot of points just like they have been doing the last two weeks.

And based on the way Kentucky plays defense, it should not be a problem. But Georgia has to limit the turnovers, maintain their blocks and not let the crowd be a factor. If they can do those three things, they should have no problem earning their third consecutive win.
