Why is Vitali Klitschko Not As Powerful As He Once Was?
Why is Vitali Klitschko not as powerful as he once was?
One of the many impressive facts about Vitali Klitschko is the fact that he holds the over all record for highest knock out percentage in heavyweight champion history. At his knockout power peak, he had an amazing knock out percentage of 92 percent.
Now after his recent fights, including the most recent 12-round beating of Shannon Briggs, he now currently holds a knockout percentage of 88 percent, which is still rather impressive but with two of his last four fights going the distance it has significantly brought down his over all knockout percentage.
So why is it that the champion known as Dr. Iron Fist, and rightfully named so, not scoring the exciting knock outs that he once achieved with such ease
As many of you know Vitali holds a PhD in Sports Medicine. Due to being a doctor in this field he may have grasped a more expert technique and style to fight and manage his stamina, endurance and over all performance after coming back out of retirement from his various injuries which forced him to retire.
Ever since Vitali came back from retirement he has fought in a more over all smart efficient style where he seems to comfortably outbox his opponents rather than just slugging it out and breathing hard after three rounds or so. He began to use his significant advantages of his superior height, reach, and weight over his significantly inferior opponents.
I recall sitting ringside at the Klitschko vs Arreola fight and I turned to several of boxing's most reputable columnists and said do you guys think Vitali lost his power somehow? They all pretty much agreed that he was now fighting smarter and more technical than before.
Could this be that the long layoff after the Hasim Rahman canceled fights really was an awakening for Dr. Vitali to be a more technical fighter?
Vitali's life long goals within politics such as becoming mayor in his hometown of Kiev and to help change his community for the better of his people may have influenced him to be a more wiser all around fighter.
It is quite evident from watching pretty much any Vitali fight that he is a head hunter, meaning he throws power shots primarily at the head region of his opponents. It is rare that you see Vitali go to the body.
Body shots are often the more dangerous blows that when properly landed will eventually lead to breaking down an opponent and inevitably causing them to fall down in the later rounds. Also of course if you land the precise body shot to the liver area you will knock out your opponent and have them lying hopelessly in a paralyzed manner.
Vitali may not wish to go to the body for he is often significantly taller than his opponents and he is now more than ever using his height and reach to distance himself from his opponents and he is not getting in close to properly execute a fight ending body shot.
Could you imagine what would happen to any of these fighters who lasted until the later rounds or even survived to a decision had Vitali decided to go to their bodies? That fight would be over faster than David Hasselhoff would be spotted in a German shopping mall.
So maybe you too are wondering why is it that Vitali has fallen a bit off of his highest knock out percentage throne. What are your thoughts and reasoning?
Vitali, if you should fight again I highly suggest you should go to the body next time. I guarantee you it will do wonders and we will get your knock out percentage back up into the 90 percentile faster than David Hasselhoff can sell out the German mega stadiums that you too can sell out by fighting someone who is not worthy of fighting you.
