Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Thrilla in Manila Part II?

Leo ReyesOct 19, 2010

At the renowned Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, a streamer announcing the dream fight between two of the world's best boxers with the text that reads, Next Attraction: Thrilla in Manila Part ll. Featuring Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, would be a nice sight to see early next year for thousands of boxing fans.

Sounds too far off? Not with Hermie Rivera, himself a popular broadcaster and boxing promoter who once managed former world boxing champion Luisito Espinosa.

Manila Standard's Alejandro del Rosario relates to Hermie Rivera's plan and wrote:

"Win or lose, Manny Pacquiao hangs up the gloves after the Margarito fight on Nov. l3 at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. This would end Manny’s contractual obligations to Arum. Then, Manny spends time as Congressman Pacquiao until, say six months before he’s lured out of retirement.

That’s one part of the equation. What about Mayweather?

Mayweather is his own man, without a manager and incorrigibly unmanageable. It seems to run in the family—Floyd Jr. , Mayweather Sr. and Uncle Roger all have pending court cases involving domestic violence.

Would Mayweather be willing to come and fight Pacquiao in Manila? That’s the hard part.

After all the racial slurs and insults he dumped on Pacquiao and therefore also against Pinoys, Floyd might be mobbed upon arrival at NAIA. But not in the true tradition of Filipino hospitality.

But then he might just come. The money is just too big to pass up.

“Thrilla in Manila II, starring Pacquiao vs. Mayweather”?

Why not? The idea may sound harebrained to some, cockeyed to others because of the enormity of it all—the cost and convincing Mayweather to come over. Still, the idea brings back a flood of memories of the original 1975 Thrilla in Manila pitting Muhammad Ali against Smoking Joe Frazier"

Is the Thrilla in Manila Part II possible?

It happened 35 years ago and there is no reason why it could not happen now.

For sure, boxing fans will say it won't happen. There's just too many hurdles that need to be made.Too many problems that need to be addressed before a fight can be made.

Promoters play a very important role in making a fight happen as they are instrumental in generating the kind of revenues that will take care of the expenses in staging the fight and the money that will take care of the fight purse.

In the case of Manny Pacquiao, his contract with Bob Arum's Top Rank is reportedly expiring after his November fight with Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao will then have the option to renew his contract or retire from boxing for good and just concentrate on being a successful politician.

On the other hand, Mayweather who is facing multiple charges of domestic violence in the state of Nevada, could eventually drop Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, making himself a free agent under his own promotions company.

Both boxers have their own promotions companies and each could collaborate with a major promotions outfit for logistical support.

Once they are freed from their contractual obligations, it would be a lot easier for Pacquiao and Mayweather to talk about retiring for good or to give in to the wishes of boxing fans for a fight everyone in the world wants to see.

If they so decide to finally give in the the wishes of boxing fans, they would still need major promotions companies to make the fight happen especially if Mayweather agrees to fight Pacquiao in Manila.

Still top promoters including Golden Boy, Don King and Top Rank could emerge as possible lead promoters of the ambitious Thrilla in Manila Part II.
