BCS Rankings 2010: If Boise State Is In Driver's Seat, Who Gets Squeezed Out?
With the BCS polls about to be released this weekend, it's time for me to give you a look at just how I believe the BCS polls will look when we do get our first glance at it.
ESPN has already given their projections, to a lot of people's chagrin, but it's why we do what we do. To have a little fun with it.
So, agree with me or don't, but here's the way I believe the BCS top 25 will look tomorrow afternoon.
No. 25: N.C. State
1 of 25
Projected Record: 6-1
Wins: Western Carolina, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Boston College, East Carolina*
Loss: Virginia Tech
Today's game: at East Carolina
NC State received votes after last weeks win over Boston College but couldn't crack the top 25. After a win over East Carolina and a few losses by teams in front of them, they'll finally be in.
No. 24: Air Force
2 of 25
Record: 5-1
Wins: Northwestern State, BYU, Wyoming, Navy, Colorado State, San Diego State*
Loss: (7 Oklahoma
Next game: at San Diego State
Predicting a win over the Aztecs today, the Air Force Falcons will debut in the BCS polls in the 25th spot.
No. 23: Oregon State
3 of 25
Projected record: 4-2
Wins: Louisville, (9) Arizona, Arizona State, Washington*
Losses: (6) TCU, (3) Boise State
Today's game: at Washington
Playing on the road at Washington is never easy, but with Oregon State much improved and coming off two big wins, they'll have themselves in the top 25 in the BCS.
No. 22: West Virginia
4 of 25
Projected Record: 6-1
Wins: Coastal Carolina, Marshall, Maryland, UNLV, South Florida, Syracuse*
Loss: (15) LSU
Today's game: vs Syracuse
West Virginia will get a win over Syracuse at home today but their wins don't look all that impressive. However, it won't keep them out of the bottom half of the BCS polls when they're released.
No. 21: Wisconsin Badgers
5 of 25
Projected Record: 5-2
Wins: UNLV, San Jose State, Arizona State, Austin Peay, Minnesota
Losses: Michigan State, Ohio State*
Today's game: vs Ohio State
It's going to be a tough loss at home for Wisconsin against Terelle Pryor and Ohio State which will dump them back to 22nd.
No. 20: Missouri
6 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Illinois, McNeese State, San Diego State, Miami(OH), Colorado, Texas A&M*
Losses: None
Today's game: at Texas A&M
The Missouri Tigers are better than people give them credit for. They'll have a tough fight on their hands in College Station against Texas A&M but they'll come out smelling like roses (no pun intended).
No. 19: Florida
7 of 25
Projected Record: 5-2
Wins: Miami(OH), South Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State*
Losses: Alabama, LSU
Today's game: vs Mississippi State
The Gators are coming off back-to-back losses against Alabama and LSU, though some might tell you they got robbed against LSU. The Gators will get back on the horse against the Bulldogs of Mississippi State.
No. 18: Nevada
8 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Wins: Eastern Washington, Colorado State, Cal, BYU, UNLV, San Jose State, Hawaii*
Losses: None
Today's game: at Hawaii
This is going to be a tough game for Nevada to win but they're much improved from the last few years and they'll prove it today.
No. 17: Arizona
9 of 25
Projected Record: 5-1
Wins: Toledo, Citadel, (9) Iowa, Cal, Washington State*
Loss: Oregon State
Today's game: at Washington State
Playing the worst the PAC-10 has to offer won't be hard for Arizona to do, even on the road.
No. 16: Florida State
10 of 25
Projected Record: 6-1
Wins: Stamford, BYU, Wake Forest, Virginia, Miami, Boston College*
Loss: (6) Oklahoma
Today's game: vs Boston College
A win over Boston College, especially at home, isn't going to move them up the rankings all that much before the BCS polls are released.
No. 15: Oklahoma State
11 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Washington State, Troy, Tulsa, Texas A&M, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas Tech*
Losses: None
Today's game: at Texas Tech
Oklahoma State snuck away from Texas A&M thanks to the Aggies turning the ball over several times. A win on the road against the Red Raiders would say a lot about this Oklahoma State team.
No. 14: Iowa
12 of 25
Projected Record: 5-1
Wins: Eastern Illinois, Iowa State, Ball State, Penn State, Michigan*
Loss: (20) Arizona
Today's game: at Michigan
This is going to be a big win for Iowa but one that isn't going to push them that much further up the rankings. The BCS will see Michigan for an outsider, not a legit top 25 contender.
No. 13: Stanford
13 of 25
Projected Record: 5-1
Wins: Sacramento State, UCLA, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, USC
Loss: (2) Oregon
Today's game: bye
Stanford did what they needed to do right before the bye week, picking up a last second win over USC at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
No. 12: Michigan State
14 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Wins: Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Notre Dame, Northern Colorado, (16) Wisconsin, (24) Michigan, Illinois*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs. Illinois
Michigan State just keeps rolling along and they'll continue to do so against Illinois. Might not be a blowout, but they'll do enough to stay where they are.
No. 11: South Carolina
15 of 25
Projected Record: 5-1
Wins: Southern Miss, Georgia, Furman, (8) Alabama, Kentucky*
Loss: (7) Auburn
Today's game: at Kentucky
The Wildcats pushed Auburn for four quarters but I don't see them having the same kind of success against the team that knocked off Alabama one week earlier.
No. 10: Utah
16 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Pitt, UNLV, New Mexico, San Jose State, Iowa State, Wyoming*
Losses: None
Today's game: at Wyoming
The Utes have proved that they're going to be a team to be reckoned with. The tough part of their schedule is yet to come so one more blowout over Wyoming won't move them before the rankings come out.
No. 9: LSU
17 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Wins: North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, (25) West Virginia, Tennessee, (22) Florida, McNeese State*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs McNeese State
A win over a less than lackluster team isn't going to be enough to keep them in front of either Auburn or Alabama.
No. 8: Alabama
18 of 25
Projected Record: 6-1
Wins: San Jose State, Penn State, Duke, (13) Arkansas, (22) Florida, Mississippi*
Loss: (11) South Carolina
Today's game: vs Mississippi
A win over Ole Miss today isn't going to do much to take the sting out of their loss against South Carolina last week.
No. 7: Auburn
19 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Win: Arkansas State, Mississippi State, Clemson, (11) South Carolina, Louisiana-Monroe, Kentucky, (13) Arkansas*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs (13) Arkansas
Auburn is the one team that's laying in the grass, like a real life Tiger, just waiting for a few teams in front of them to lose so they can push their way up to the top.
No. 6: Nebraska
20 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Utah State, (16) Florida State, Air Force, Cincinnati, Texas, Iowa State*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs Iowa State
Oklahoma snuck away from Utah State, Air Force, and Cincinnati in games they could have easily lost. However, they picked up wins in all three and remain unbeaten through six weeks of the season.
No. 5: Ohio State
21 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Wins: Marshall, Miami, Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, (18) Wisconsin*
Losses: None
Today's game: at Wisconsin
While Ohio State might be number one in every other poll, I don't believe they will be when the BCS polls are released. They played every non-conference game at home with the only challenge coming against Miami in the season's second week.
No. 4: TCU
22 of 25
Projected Record: 7-0
Wins: Oregon State, Tennessee Tech, Baylor, SMU, Colorado State, Wyoming, BYU*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs. BYU
TCU has been playing as well as any team in the country and they'll prove that as they face BYU at home today.
No. 3: Nebraska
23 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Western Kentucky, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota State, Kansas State, Texas*
Losses: None
Today's game: vs Texas
Nebraska is far and away a better team than they were last year and they've been putting up perfomances that have proven that, especially from their quarterback Taylor Martinez. They'll get their payback in a big way against Texas today.
No. 2: Oregon
24 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: New Mexico, Tennessee, Portland State, Arizona State, (14) Stanford, Washington State
Losses: None
Today's game: bye
Oregon has been putting up some of the highest offensive numbers we've seen in quite some time. If they keep this up throughout the rest of the season, they could become known as one of the best offensive teams in college football history.
No. 1: Boise State
25 of 25
Projected Record: 6-0
Wins: Virginia Tech, Wyoming, Oregon State, New Mexico State, Toledo, San Jose State*
Losses: None
Today's game: at San Jose State
Say what you want about Boise State. Hate on them as much as want for the conference they play in or the teams that they play. But for all the talking and hating that's done against the Broncos, I don't see anyone bigger than Virginia Tech making sure they schedule the Broncos to prove once and for all that they're not as good as some of us believe they are.
