Washington D.C. Athletes Coming Together

Josh McCainOct 13, 2010

As I begin to write this article, the words of John Lennon accompanied by a wonderful guitar riff by George Harrison dance though out my head.

"Come together, right now, over me..."

In most sports cities it's not uncommon to see other local athletes at an NBA game.  I'm not sure of the reason; maybe they're just more visible when they're sitting at courtside seats.  Every once and a while, you'll see a local athlete at a baseball game (usually a big game), but that's usually it.

However, here in Washington D.C. I've begin to notice something.

All the local sports teams are out supporting one another, almost like high school.

Just recently several Capitals, including Alexander Ovechkin, have been spotted at Redskins games, along with Wizards rookie John Wall.

It goes both ways as Redskins defensive end/outside linebacker Andre Carter tweeted a few pictures from the Capitals game the other night.

The D.C. Sports Bog's Dan Steinberg has an article about DeAngelo Hall and Alexander Ovechkin after Sunday's Skins victory over the Green Bay Packers.

There are some nice quotes in the article from Hall. I'm not going to step on Steinberg's toes, so click the link above to check it out.

Now I could be wrong, but I don't recall D.C. sports stars coming out and supporting one another like they have been for the past year.

It could be just me (and I'm known for overexerting when it comes to my teams) but it just feels like these athletes are taking great pride in this area.  And when you take pride in what you do, it shows in your work.

Will this showing of support for one another translate in championships for D.C.?

Honestly, I can't tell you either way, but it goes back to what coach Mike Shanahan has been preaching for weeks now, and that's character.

All of these guys are coming off more like team (or even D.C.) guys instead of me guys.

And when an athlete is playing for more than just himself, he seems to play at a higher level.

So kudos to all you guys going out and supporting one another.
