NCAA Football: How Would You Like a 24-Team NCAA Tournament?

Alex RobertsOct 15, 2010

I know that the BCS is highly argued, pretty much controversial and pretty much everyone's most hated sports system.

I would desperately love to see what would happen in a full fledged playoff—and not like most people have it.

I would not take the top 25 teams and add a couple wild cards; I would make it even tougher on all divisions.

If you are one of the top two in your division (either division champion or top two in overall standings), you would be in the playoff.

That's right—small conference teams get in. Big bad mama jammas get left out. Do I really think this is completely fair? Nah...but it would be fun to see the variety of teams that get in!

When it all comes together, there are 22 teams. 24 is a more even number.

So, this is where an all mighty vote comes in.

After the 22 teams are in, the coaches and media get to vote on the two teams that get in.  That's right—only two wild cards.

Here is who I see getting in to this tournament (based on current standings plus my opinion on how the remainder of the year will shake out).

Keep in mind, this is wild—and the picks are just an opinion.

Now, before you go calling me an SEC homer, hear me out: The way I picked the two wild card teams was by looking at the coaches and AP polls. These are the two highest teams that aren't already included in the field.

Other candidates would include Iowa, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Missouri.

Now, how do you match these teams up?

Simple—the BCS, which would still be around. You assign seeds to the teams based on where they lie on the BCS landscape. Standard high versus low seeds apply, and there you go.

The top eight seeds would have a bye week.

Here is what the bracket would look like:

NCAA Football Championship

There are some pretty good games here; there are also some games that make you want to throw up in your mouth a little.

Is it perfect?  Absolutely not.

Some of the best teams in the country WILL get left out.

However, it would allow more teams to compete for the championship; it will also help alleviate the conference bias.

The season would have tons more meaning because the top two in each conference would be fighting for a spot in the tournament—and you could fight all season long, as opposed to the "one loss and done" method seen in today's system.

Plus, wouldn't it be awesome to see a team like Nevada make a run at the title? Shock a few big teams? How epic would a HUGE upset be in a tournament setting like this?

Anyway, there are no perfect systems. Hopefully one day, someone will give some from of tournament a try.
