Colt McCoy Era to Begin Sunday For Cleveland Browns?

Greg SwartzOct 11, 2010

The plan coming into 2010 for the Cleveland Browns was simple: Let Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace handle the quarterbacking duties.  Keep rookie Colt McCoy safe on the sideline for a season and let him soak in knowledge from Delhomme, Mike Holmgren and whatever Eric Mangini has to offer.

As in most years, it appears the Browns are going with Plan B.

With Delhomme and Wallace nursing injury, it appears young Colt could see his first regular season action this Sunday.

It’s cool, he can handle it, right?  I mean, they’re only playing the Steelers.

In Pittsburgh.

With Ben Roethlisberger returning for the first time this season after a four-game suspension.

What could go wrong?

Well, as history shows with Browns rookie quarterbacks, a lot.  Charlie Frye was the last Cleveland rookie to start against the Steelers and let’s just say, he’s still icing those hits.

Frye was sacked eight times in a 41-0 loss back in 2005.  And Pittsburgh’s defense is arguably better than that seasons' bone-crunching crew.

The Browns have resigned QB Brett Ratliff as insurance barring another injury.  Ratliff was on the Browns roster in the preseason before being cut and signed by the Patriots practice quad.

Neither represents a particularly attractive option, but by starting McCoy you have someone who is at least familiar with the playbook.

Good luck Colt, and might I suggest handing to that Hillis guy a couple times.
