BCS Rankings 2010: What The College Football Standings Should Look Like
Each college football season, the middle of October means three letters that bring a combination of confusion, disbelief, and terror to any fan's face.
BCS.
The Bowl Championship Series has confounded the masses since it's inception in 1998. While, most years, the system selects the two best teams, no organized sport should be held at the mercy of a computer.
All across the internet and blogosphere, one can find predictions, projections, and prognostications. Odds are, a fan or writer will have a different take than the mysterious computers that play such a big role in the process.
Of course, any poll or ranking is a fluid system that won't be set in stone for months. That said, this is not my version of what I think the BCS Rankings will be; these are my top 5 teams.
5. Auburn University Tigers
1 of 5
Record: 6-0 (3-0)
Quality Wins: University of South Carolina Gamecocks
This Gene Chizik-led squad is the 5th best team in the country right now. They knocked off a South Carolina team that won handily over the defending champion University of Alabama Crimson Tide.
At quarterback, Cameron Newton leads the team in passing and rushing and looks to be an early Heisman hopeful. Their offense is 8th in the country in points and they are near the top of the class in the SEC.
While they're off to a great start, upcoming home games with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks and the LSU Tigers will determine the direction of their season.
4. LSU Tigers
2 of 5
Record: 6-0 (4-0)
Quality Wins: University of Florida Gators
Les Miles and his LSU Tigers are the 4th best team in the country, right now. It's easy to say that they win sloppy and they win games that they shouldn't, but this has been his M.O. from the very start.
Miles takes chances, counts his blessings, and wins games. The win over the Gators was keyed by a gutsy fake field goal late in the game, a play call made in classic Miles fashion.
At 6-0 as an SEC team, it's hard to say that this team isn't one of the best in the land. Like the No. 5 team on this list, their season will be determined by their next two games: At Auburn and home vs. Alabama.
3. Ohio State University Buckeyes
3 of 5
Record: 6-0 (2-0)
Quality Wins: None
While they haven't beaten anyone of note just yet, this Buckeye team is immensely talented and the toughest part of their schedule is still to come. Not to mention, the teams they have played, they have absolutely pummeled.
Their schedule includes away games at the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, as well as games against the University of Michigan Wolverines and the Penn State University Nittany Lions.
In a tough Big Ten, Ohio St. has rolled to six victories; expect many more.
2. Oklahoma University Sooners
4 of 5
Record: 5-0 (1-0)
Quality Wins: Florida State University Seminoles, University of Texas Longhorns
The Sooners are the class of the Big 12. Once again, Bob Stoops has his team playing at a high level while navigating the always dangerous waters of the Big 12 South.
Road match ups at the University of Missouri Tigers and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will be tough games that should determine their fate.
Their perennially high powered offense has carried them thus far and look for them to be in the discussion all year.
1. University of Oregon Ducks
5 of 5
Record: 6-0 (3-0)
Quality Wins: Stanford University Cardinal
The Oregon Ducks are by far the best team in college football. Their offense is second to none; they average an NCAA FBS best 54.3 points per game. Their rushing attack is rated No. 4 at 317.8 yards per game.
The rushing attack is led by LaMichael James, one of the best running backs in the country and a Heisman candidate.
Even after losing Jeremiah Masoli, one of the most dynamic players in the country last year, this Oregon team has proved to be the best in the land. Their season will swing on away games at the Oregon State University Beavers and the USC Trojans, as well as a home game against the University of Arizona Wildcats.
