Georgia Football: Observations From Saturday's Win in Athens
It feels good to write an article not fueled by anger, rage, and a blood thirst for change.
Saturday was a good day to be a Georgia Bulldog coach, player and fan as UGA crushed Tennessee 41-14.
It was a win that was desperately needed to rejuvenate the team and build momentum for their next opponent Vanderbilt.
Although this game was a blowout, there were some key things to point out that must change/continue as the season progresses.
Point 1 - Let’s get the negatives out the way early so we can focus later on the positives.
With the exception of the tipped interception, Georgia’s secondary still seemed a bit vulnerable to the big play.
Did they really give up the big play all game? Not necessarily, but watching the game you could tell there’s still plenty of work to be done back there as receivers were still left wide-open gliding behind Rambo and the deep cover men.
Point 2 - No longer is carrying the rock just physical for Washaun Ealey, it has become a mental burden for him.
In yet another strange way, Washaun found a way to cough up the ball deep in enemy territory. Thankfully for Ealey and players, the ball rolled harmlessly out of bounds.
With the news of Caleb King being held in jail and his status with the team in jeopardy, it is essential that Ealey get a handle on holding on to the football at once.
Point 3 – Now getting defensive, let’s talk about a huge breath of fresh air. Although a work in progress, Kiante Tripp was a force to be reckoned with at nose.
His presence helped defend the run and put pressure on the QB. What makes this so spectacular is that just last year he was blocking for our offense. As Kiante continues to grow, watch for the defense to be more aggressive in stopping the run and QB.
Point 4 – Whatever shuffling of the deck Stacy Searels did with the offensive line can stop now. The combination of Trinton Sturdivant, Clint Boling, Kenarious Gates, Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn is a Royal Flush for the dawgs.
Running was much easier for Georgia and the pass protection, well lets just say Murray was the freshman player of the week. That’s what he can do when given time ant the opportunity to pick apart opposing defenses.
Point 5 - Creativity! Non-predictability! Exciting!
Would you believe it if someone told you these were the characteristics of Georgia’s play calling?
Well Saturday it definitely was. For this one time we shall give credit where credit is do and say Bobo called a terrific game plan this week. This doesn’t rule out the notion that Richt had a significant amount of input Saturday but still Bobo called all the plays.
Georgia dictated the tempo of the game with their offense and had Tennessee off balance the entire game. Hopefully we shall continue to see a similar style of game called in the following weeks.
Georgia played an impressive football game against a team that took LSU to the wire the previous week. This wasn’t Alabama but this was an SEC team and we did get a convincing victory under our belts.
Let’s hope for continued focus and energy as the Vanderbilt Commodores come into the Classic City this weekend.
