ACC Power Poll Week 6: FSU on top; North Carolina showing resiliency.
Previous Rankings at All About Sports
1) Florida State Seminoles 5-1 (3-0) Last Week - 2
Florida State went down to Miami and crushed the Canes 45-17.
Wow, the Noles got good quickly.
Let's see—LSU's Les Miles must be the devil. There's no other explanation for his luck, and Jimbo Fisher used to coach with Miles and Florida State is awesome again. Hmm...
Actually, the defense is starting to display some of the same off the edge pass rush that the great 1990s FSU teams had. The Noles are peaking at the right time and get a reeling Boston College team Saturday.
2) Virginia Tech Hokies 4-2 (2-0) Last Week - 3
The Hokies are cruising through the easy part of their schedule: They blew out Central Michigan 45-21.
Tyrod Taylor had 127 yards rushing. The Hokies are doing this without star RB Ryan Williams.
3) Miami Hurricanes 3-2 (1-1) Last Week - 1
They head to Duke Saturday, and that should help the Canes recover from the FSU blowout.
4) North Carolina Tar Heels 3-2 (1-1) Last Week - 4
North Carolina plays at Virginia next. The Cavs always give the Tar Heels trouble.
5) NC State Wolfpack 5-1 (2-1) Last Week - 5
With a game at East Carolina next, the Wolfpack should be able to move to 6-1 on the season.
6) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4-2 (3-1) Last Week - 8
Georgia Tech ran, ran, and ran Virgina right out of Atlanta Saturday in the 33-21 win.
They had a whopping 477 yards rushing and Anthony Allen had 195 on the ground. If not for 4 fumbles that were mostly Georgia Tech's own fault, the final score would have been worse.
Overall, the Jacket's played very well and the defense is starting to adapt to Al Groh 's 3-4 scheme.
They get what should be an easy one with Middle Tennessee St. Saturday, then the schedule get's really tough.
7) Clemson Tigers 2-3 (0-2) Last Week - 6
I'm not sure what's going at Clemson, but Dabo Swinney is coaching more and more like Tommy Bowden with each passing week—the Tigers look good on paper, but don't play to their apparent talent level.
They looked listless in a 21-16 loss at North Carolina; not to mention South Carolina, Clemson's arch rival, just knocked off Alabama and it was a rough weekend for Tiger fans.
The Tigers can forget any Atlantic Division repeat. They next face Maryland at home. I think Clemson will out-talent Maryland, but if they don't, it could get ugly for Swinney.
8) Maryland Terrapins 4-1 (1-0) Last Week - 7
Maryland has had week off to prepare for the Clemson Tigers.
The Terps have had success against Clemson in recent years, and a win in Death Valley is not out of the question.
9) Virginia Cavaliers 2-3 (0-2) Last Week - 9
The Cavaliers had no answer for the Georgia Tech rushing attack Saturday in a 33-21 loss.
This won't be a quick fix at Virginia.
Mike London has a big rebuilding project in front of him. The Cavaliers have shown signs of improvement at time this year, so Cav fans need to be patient.
10) Boston College Eagles 2-3 (0-2) Last Week - 10
I never thought that Boston College would be so bad on offense—they rank 105th in the nation in total offense.
They can't run, they can't pass, and they can't settle on a quarterback. I consider the Eagles one of the more disappointing teams in the ACC.
It won't get any easier for BC as they'll travel to Florida St. Saturday, and the Noles are playing great right now.
11) Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2-4 (1-3) Last Week - 11
Ever had the feeling of deja vu? The Deacs know the feeling.
For the second week in a row, Wake Forest dominated a triple option team for 3 1/2 qtrs only to give up a last minute drive to lose the game; first, it was Georgia Tech then it was Navy driving for a 28-27 win. The Decs could easily be 4-2.
With a road game at Virginia Tech, any bowl hopes for Wake Forest are slipping away.
12) Duke Blue Devils 1-4 (0-2) Last Week - 12
The Blue Devils have a week to get ready for what now should be one set of very angry Miami Hurricanes.
This doesn't look good for Duke.
