SEC Football: Power Ranking the Conference Going Into Week 6
We are close to the midway point of the college football season and the SEC race is starting to heat up. The two teams from Alabama look to be the class of the SEC while another undefeated team is taking a lot of heat. And can Georgia bounce back and finally get a conference win on Saturday? Here are the latest SEC Team Rankings.
No.1: Alabama Crimson Tide
1 of 12
In what was considered the biggest game of the 2010 season Alabama physically dominated Florida and made it look easy. They have a strong running game and are improving on defense. Can anybody beat this team?
No. 2: Auburn Tigers
2 of 12
Auburn is trying to be the best team in the state of Alabama, and they are doing a good job keeping up with the Tide so far. Now the problem is they started 5-0 last year and went on to lose five of their last six SEC games. That won't happen again this year because they have a dynamic QB in Cam Newton and the defense is improving.
No. 3: Arkansas Razorbacks
3 of 12
One team that had a chance of defeating Alabama was the Razorbacks, but costly mistakes came back to hurt them in the end. Ryan Mallet is a good as any QB in the SEC and the defense does enough to make this a team that can win 10 games this year.
No. 4: Florida Gators
4 of 12
The reality of the situation for Florida is they are only 4-1, but what happened on Saturday was not surprising to anyone who watched the Gators the first four games of the season. The talent is there, but they need to play better if they want to win the rest of their games.
No. 5: LSU Tigers
5 of 12
No one knows how LSU does it, but they always find a way to win games they have no business winning. It may be luck, it may be living on the edge. Whatever it is, they are undefeated, but they have to play better if they want to beat Auburn and Alabama down the road.
No. 6: South Carolina
6 of 12
After a tough loss to Auburn two weeks ago, South Carolina got the week off last week and they needed it to prepare for Alabama this Saturday. Stephen Garcia will get the green light and if the Gamecocks want to be considered in the upper-echelon of SEC teams, they must beat the Tide.
No. 7: Mississippi State Bulldogs
7 of 12
Dan Mullen has got things rolling down in Starkville. Chad Bumphis is one of the best receivers in the conference and the defense has been solid at the beginning of the season. If they get a win Saturday against Houston, the Bulldogs will be 4-2.
No.8: Kentucky Wildcats
8 of 12
The Wildcats have a 3-2 record, but are on a two game losing slide and have Auburn this Saturday. Randall Cobb is on pace to have over 1,000 yards on total offense and in order for the Cats to defeat Auburn, Cobb has to be on fire and the rest of the team has to play mistake-free football.
No. 9: Tennessee Volunteers
9 of 12
They are coming off a heartbreaking loss to LSU and it was a game where the the Vols outplayed the Tigers. They are now 2-3 but are playing hard each game, but the talent is not there. Give Derek Dooley some time and if the players buy into is system, Tennessee will be back sooner than later.
No.10: Georgia Bulldogs
10 of 12
Georgia is a place where they haven't been in a while. They are finding ways to lose and making costly mistakes in the fourth quarter. They are 1-4 and haven't loss four consecutive games in over 20 years. Can they salvage the season and will Mark Richt be back next year?
No.11: Ole Miss Rebels
11 of 12
They suffered a tough and surprising loss to Jacksonville State earlier in the year, but it looks as if they are getting back on track after a dominating win over Kentucky. QB Jeremiah Masoli is as good as advertised and he will have a chance to prove it once again when the Rebels play Alabama next week.
No. 12: Vanderbilt Commodores
12 of 12
Vandy is 1-1 in the SEC with a win over Ole Miss, have tough non conferences losses to Northwestern and Connecticut. They have trouble scoring point and the defense is not holding up their end of the bargain either, giving up 26 points per game. Running back Warren Norman is a bright spot for this team, but other than that, the talent is just not there.
