Premier League Team Of The Week: Chelsea, Tottenham, Villa & Blackpool Players
Another weekend of Premier League, another weekend of shocks and horrors.
For the second time in a row, Alex Ferguson's Manchester United fail to beat a team that many would have expected them to take three points from.
Sunderland, yet again frustrate one of the big team and hold United to a draw, improving their record against the top teams. Sunderland have drawn with United, Liverpool, Arsenal and have beaten Manchester City.
Liverpool's season feel to a new low with defeat to Blackpool. Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to the newly promoted side and Roy Hodgson's seat will be feel a lot warmer today.
Manchester City won, but many are arguing that Newcastle has every right to feel hard done by as they conceded a penalty which was not a penalty, while also having a claim of their own turned down.
Chelsea got back onto the right foot with a win against London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Tottenham dealt Aston Villa another loss with a 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane.
The formation I will be using this week is the trusty 4-4-2.
Goalkeeper: Matthew Gilks—Blackpool
1 of 11
For everyone reading this and asking who? Matthew Gilks is Blackpool's goalkeeper and is one of the reasons that Liverpool suffered one, if not their most embarrassing Premier League defeat at Anfield.
Gilks showed good hands during the game. He was calm and composed and did not let the occasion get to him. He also pulled out a fine stop late in the game to keep Liverpool at one and to win the game for Blackpool.
Right Back: Carlos Salcido—Fulham
2 of 11
One of the best pieces of business Mark Hughes has done since joining the ranks at Fulham.
Carlos Salcido has shown great quality in his short time in the Premier League thus far. Despite being a left back, his performance was deserved of a place in the team and he has been unfortunate to miss out in other weeks.
He was a constant threat down the flank for Fulham. He cleared a shot off the line at one end and then was at the heart of the offense at the other.
Centre Back: Nemanja Vidic—Manchester United
3 of 11
The only positive Alex Ferguson can really take out of the Sunderland draw, and pretty much the past few games has been the play of his captain.
Nemanja Vidic has recaptured his best form and he has been relaying it on the pitch. He was a force at the back for United and he has really lead by example since taking over as team captain.
He was an anchor at the heart of the defense for United and let nothing through the air cause any problems.
Centre Back: Richard Dunne—Aston Villa
4 of 11
Despite a less than impressive start to the new campaign Richard Dunne showed why he was one of Aston Villa's biggest assists last year against Tottenham.
He was at the heart of everything for Villa defensively. He made some very key tackles and interceptions, along with a crucial block on Rafael Van Der Vaart.
Dunne was unlucky to be on the losing team.
Left Back: Leighton Baines—Everton
5 of 11
Everton and there left back showed just how good the team is this weekend, despite sitting in the relegation zone.
Everton went to one of the toughest places in the Premier League and got a win. Leighton Baines was without question the man of the match. Everything that went forward went along the left and through him.
He caused the Birmingham back line a whole load of problems and they could just not shut him down.
Right Midfield: Marc Albrighton—Aston Villa
6 of 11
I said in the very first week that Marc Albrighton would get himself back into the team of the week and I was correct in assuming that.
Despite losing the game, Villa started the brighter and Albrighton was one of the key factors to that.
His goal was scored simply by his willingness to get into the box and not give up on a play. He also worked relentlessly back the field to help in defense.
He showed great energy, work rate and commitment to the team from start to finish - which was the 80th minute for him.
Centre Midfield: Michael Essien—Chelsea
7 of 11
One of the biggest additions to the Chelsea team this year was not a signing, but in fact the return of their Ghanaian anchorman Michael Essien.
He was on-hand to break up everything Arsenal tried to do in attack. His work rate and effort is second to none.
He was to much for the Arsenal midfield to handle, and he showed true class with some telling through balls and nutmegs.
Centre Midfield: Steed Malbranque—Sunderland
8 of 11
Steed Malbranque is a very underrated player. Put he showed just what he can do against United.
He was the orchestrator of everything Sunderland did going forward. His work and movement in the opening half helped give Sunderland the momentum and force to continue to drive at United and really cause them some difficulties.
Sunderland's best form of defense was attack and it was all done via the Frenchman.
Left Midfield: Rafael van der Vaart —Tottenham
9 of 11
Rafael Van Der Vaart had some week for Spurs. First he done everything, good and bad in the Champions League for them, he then took the Premier League against Villa by the scruff of the neck and single handily won them the game.
Everything Spurs done was created via the Dutchman. His two goals were both fine strikes, taking very well. He also tossed in great crosses for Spurs two big men and really should have had a hat-trick but was just slightly off-target.
Harry Redknapp has had his transfer fee repaid in full already.
Striker: Luke Varney—Blackpool
10 of 11
If you heard that one striker in the Liverpool versus Blackpool game was a thorn in the side of the opposition and that they could not handle him all game, you would be forgiven for thinking that Fernando Torres was the topic of conversation. But in fact it was Luke Varney.
Liverpool had no answer for him. He done brilliantly to win a penalty against Liverpool's right back Glen Johnson.
As if that was not enough, he broke forward, beat Liverpool's attempted offside trap and netted himself to double Blackpool's lead and win the game for them.
Striker: Didier Drogba—Chelsea
11 of 11
Arsenal just can not handle Drogba, it is that simple.
Drogba was too strong, quick and skillful for the Arsenal team. He opened the scoring with a delightful flick that creep in at the near post. He was a constant threat to Arsenal's backline and they will be glad to see the back of him.
Drobga was subbed against City last weekend due to a terrible performance, he made up for that in full against their London rivals.
