Florida State-Virginia: Report Card for Seminoles' Win

Sean GrimmOct 3, 2010

Florida State made a huge statement last weekend with a road win over in-conference opponent Virginia.

There were doubts as to whether the Seminoles were ready to win on the road yet, especially after the embarrassing loss to Oklahoma in Norman.

Florida State proved the doubts to be wrong and did so in good fashion.

Here are the grades breaking down the play of the separate units.

Offense: A

While Florida State's offense hasn't exactly looked pretty consistently, they are currently atop the ACC in average yards per game.

Saturday against the Cavaliers was no exception, as the Seminoles dominated the Virginia defense for a majority of the game. Running back Jermaine Thomas racked up over 100 yards before the half, and the Seminoles accounted for 27 points in the first two quarters.

The only room for improvement was in the passing game, as Christian Ponder and the receivers struggled to find their groove in the beginning once again.

Defense: A

Ever since getting embarrassed by Oklahoma's offense, Florida State's defense has really stepped up and proven they are here to compete.

They once again dominated in the first half of Saturday's game, shutting out the Cavaliers in the first two quarters and allowing less than 50 yards of offense.

However, the defense does need to be able to finish, something they did not do against Virginia. They allowed 14 points in the second half as well as over 200 yards of offense. Had the defense finished strong, this grade definitely would have been an A+.

Special Teams: A

The Seminoles' special teams had a good day but didn't show anything spectacular.

Greg Reid did break out a nice return on a punt but was stripped just before he went down. Other than that, everyone else did what they were asked to.

Kicker Dustin Hopkins continued to show his strong foot.

Coaching: A+

There's not much more you could have asked for from the coaching staff, as they coached this Seminole team to a 27-point lead at the half. Jimbo Fisher and his assistants clearly prepared their players for the game both physically and mentally, as they successfully avoided looking forward to next week's showdown with Miami.
