Florida State Seminoles Route Wake Forest, Offense Still Looking for Consistency
The Florida State Seminoles kicked off their conference play Saturday with a home game against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
At the end of the day the Seminoles did what they were supposed to do, coming out on top of the scoreboard with a final of 31-0. The offense racked up 485 yards while the defense only allowed 185 yards, marking the second consecutive game in which the Florida State defense has allowed less than 200 yards.
To say the defense has improved from last year would be an understatement. The changes made by new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops are easy to see and a pleasant sight at that for Seminole fans after last year's struggles.
However, an unsettling fact about the Seminoles' win over Wake Forest was the offense's slow start and inconsistency throughout the game.
The Seminoles failed to score in the first quarter when their opening drive was cut short in the red zone after Christian Ponder was sacked and lost control of the football. Wake Forest recovered the fumble.
Ponder was sacked twice more before the afternoon was over, as Florida State's offensive line continued to struggle to give their senior quarterback a comfortable pocket.
Andrew Datko's absence has been noticed, as back up Henry Oreleus has really struggled in his spot holding down the left side.
And even when Ponder found time to make a comfortable throw, he struggled to find his touch as well.
Running back Ty Jones continued to impress, and back up quarterback EJ Manuel also looked smooth in his one drive at the closing of the game. Manuel connected with true freshman Kenny Shaw for a long touchdown pass.
However, if Florida State wants to continue to win in ACC play, the offense must find consistency and be able to finish drives. Against stronger opponents like Clemson and Miami, the Seminoles know they must be able to capitalize on every chance they get.
Florida State travels to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers on Oct. 2. The following weekend the Seminoles journey down to south to take on their rivals, the Miami Hurricanes.
