WWE Night of Champions Results: 10 Things We Learned From Big Show’s Win

Robert AitkenSep 19, 2010

You may have found yourself in the bathroom and missed this match entirely, but the five minutes that was Big Show vs CM Punk actually had a lot to say for the future in these two wrestlers, as well as the trends of WWE today. It also helped to reiterate points that we may forget about from time to time. All in all, here are the ten things that we learned last night.

WWE Doesn't Stick To PPV Gimmicks

1 of 10

WWE chose to squash this feud with a squash match at a pay-per-view where all championships are on the line. This match didn't feature any of them.

Was anyone supposed to be excited to see this match with nothing on the line? Why not take these two and involve them in a title match somewhere?

Imagine this: Punk and Luke Gallows team together in the Tag Team Turmoil match, where Big Show has a partner as well. Who would that partner be? Who cares. After all, did anyone see the reasoning behind the team of Mark Henry and Evan Bourne?

CM Punk No Longer Lucky In Chi-Town

2 of 10

CM Punk always seems to have a great showing in his hometown of Chicago. It was in Chicago at WrestleMania 22 that Punk made his first appearance for WWE, although it was unofficial. Punk was dressed as one of the gangsters in John Cena's elaborate entrance at that event.

As a regular member of the WWE roster, Punk defended his ECW Championship at No Mercy 2007 in his home state.

Punk also was in The Windy City when he won his only Intercontinental Championship in early 2009.

CM Punk Still Has Great Mic Skills

3 of 10

This was never a fact that got lost on many wrestling fans, but his fantastic promo in front of his hometown audience was said perfectly. With the emotion and detail in the words, it was almost like Punk wrote the promo himself.

It has gotten to the point that whenever CM Punk comes to the ring, we all secretly hope that a microphone is involved as well.

This Is The End of One Crazy Year For CM Punk

4 of 10

This was the poster for the last Night of Champions pay-per-view. Remember those days where CM Punk was squarely in the World Heavyweight Championship picture? Punk has certainly fallen off since that event took place.

CM Punk lost his belt to Jeff Hardy that night, only to win it back at the next pay-per-view: SummerSlam. After pulling a screwjob-esque title defense at Breaking Point over The Undertaker, Punk would drop the belt at Hell In A Cell to The Deadman.

Punk would later have a rematch at Bragging Rights, join a Survivor Series team, and worked the dark match before TLC. The year of 2010 started for Punk with five eliminations in the Royal Rumble and spent much of the next six months in a fascination with Rey Mysterio. All the while, 2010 saw the rise of the Straight Edge Society, but we will get to that later.

Big Show Is Still A Great Worker

5 of 10

The Big Show may not be the most athletic or nimble wrestler, but he is one of the best workers among big men in WWE history. Even at age 38, Big Show can still move around like the best of them. Sunday's match with Punk saw some spots that I would have not expected to see

Big Show Has No Direction

6 of 10

There's nothing left for The Big Show to do in WWE. It's hard to actually see him as championship material, which makes his appearance at Night of Champions all the more ironic. The angle that Big Show needs to be on now is that of an old veteran who is making younger wrestlers better. CM Punk does not count in that argument.

Big Show Will Be Face For Life

7 of 10

Over the years, it is hard to name one man in WWE who has had more fun being a face than The Big Show. As a gentle giant of sorts, Big Show just looks like he is always having fun no matter what. His promos are a lot more honest and are closer to how Big Show is really feeling.

The SES Is Officially Dead

8 of 10

I hate to do it, but I gotta call this one.

I was a big fan of the Straight Edge Society, but it looks like the faction is all over with. There is a slim chance of its survival, but it would have to include the addition of another member. My money would be on a returning Shad Gaspard, who could be the disciple that Luke Gallows and Joseph Mercury could never be.

Big Show Needs To Retire Soon

9 of 10

Big Show fills out that oversized suit well, which is why I think he should be using it a lot more often. As we all saw Chris Jericho wrestle his last match on Sunday, Big Show seems to be next on the list of old timers that will phase themselves out of it. While The Big Show, the wrestler, may want to do this forever, Paul Wight, the person, cannot.

Wight is set to see his movie, Knucklehead, come out next month. Beyond that, there isn't much else for Big Show to stick around for.

CM Punk Is About To Get Another Push

10 of 10

This may seem like I'm out on a limb, but it just feels like it will happen sooner rather than later.

Just like many that have come before him, CM Punk has been away from his championship success. The imagery of being knocked out within five minutes of a match at Night of Champions is reason enough to believe that Punk has hit rock bottom. Because of that, expect to see Punk rise back up pretty soon. With the anger of losing the SES, CM Punk can get onto a roll and could easily finish 2010 strong and, possibly, golden.
