Random Ring Remarks: Steroids, Rock or HBK?, Is Edge a Heel?, Night of Champions
Welcome to the fifth installment of the Random Ring Remarks mailbag.
You probably know the drill. You ask the questions. I give the answers.
You can check out the last installment here.
You can ask the questions at http://www.formspring.me/BOestriecher. I'll answer pretty much anything you ask me as long as the fine people here at Bleacher Report will let me post it.
Alright, let's get to it.
What's Next For McIntyre and Bourne?
1 of 26
I think they're both going to be in the mid-card for a while.
I like both of them as well, but I don't see Even Bourne main eventing anytime soon because Vince McMahon has never really liked pushing the smaller guys.
As for Drew McIntyre, I think he'll stay in feuds with Smackdown mid-carders like Christian for the foreseeable future. If my wishes came true, McIntyre would begin a feud with the Undertaker.
The Rock or HBK?
2 of 26
The Rock = the best talker in wrestling history.
Shawn Michaels = the best in-ring performer in wrestling history. So take your pick.
I'd go with HBK. I don't think anyone has ever been as good as he is in the ring.
Who Chooses Theme Songs?
3 of 26
I believe the WWE creative team chooses a theme that they think will better fit with that wrestler.
The WWE tends to use music from the same bands for several different performers, such as bands like Saliva, Adelitas Way and Rev Theory.
However, the WWE also has its own music composer, Jim Johnston, who composes theme songs to fit the wrestlers' gimmicks.
A funny story about theme songs is that Randy Orton really wanted CM Punk's current theme song, but they gave it to Punk because it "fit his gimmick better."
Why Do Wrestlers Use Steroids?
4 of 26
In wrestling, the only reason wrestlers use steroids is to get the look they want.
It's obviously not a sport, so it's not like they are getting a competitive advantage by taking performance-enhancing drugs. However, they just might be more likely to get a push.
What you said is true. Guys who aren't roided up juiceheads do get a push.
But if you look at many of the bigger stars, they're pretty jacked up.
Now I'm not saying they all took steroids (even though some are linked to them), but look at these guys: John Cena, Randy Orton, Batista, Triple H, Sheamus, Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Brock Lesnar, Bobby Lashley, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Goldberg, Booker T, Chris Benoit.
These are some of the most successful (or at least pushed) wrestlers in recent wrestling history. What do they have in common? They're all ripped up, jacked up, or both.
I don't think it is out of line to say that multiple guys in that group probably took steroids. I think prospective wrestlers see the physique of these guys, and think, "The only way I'm going to be that big is if I juice."
I agree that it isn't necessary, but seeing the guys that have been successful in the business, I can't blame them for wanting to look like that.
Will John Cena Ever Turn Heel?
5 of 26
Yeah, I can't think of many wrestlers who spend that much time as a face. John Cena's been a face for a while now, and I think he has at least another ten years in the WWE.
I can't see him staying face that long. That would just be ridiculous.
If Vince McMahon thinks people hate Cena now, imagine how much hate he would get from the older WWE fans if Cena stays with this Super Cena gimmick for another ten years.
I honestly think there'd be plenty of fans who would stop watching the WWE altogether if they have to put up with another decade of Cena overcoming the odds every night.
That being said, I don't see it happening soon because Cena is raking in millions of dollars for the company.
Should The Laycool-Melina Feud Have Waited Until Wrestlemania?
6 of 26
I don't think it should have waited for one main reason. There aren't enough divas in the WWE.
If they were to keep the Divas and Women's Championships until Wrestlemania, we would have another seven months of LayCool vs. Kelly Kelly, Tiffany or Beth Phoenix for the Women's Championship.
Then, Melina would feud with Alicia Fox or Maryse up until Wrestlemania for the Divas Championship.
At least by unifying the titles, there is a possibility for more entertaining feuds although I doubt we'll see much of a difference.
Plus, I don't think the WWE wanted to wait that long because rumors are that the company plans to unify all major championships by Wrestlemania.
It wouldn't make sense to unify them all in one night, especially since they'd probably unify the World Heavyweight and WWE Championship that night. That's enough for one show.
By the way, if you're a hot girl who doesn't plan on going to college and has hardly any athletic ability, train to be a pro wrestler. You'll have no problem making it into the WWE!
Will We See An Evolution Reunion?
7 of 26
They'll probably team up again somewhere down the road, maybe on Raw or something like that.
It's likely that they will both be faces at the same time at one point or another, and the WWE always throws random teams together on Raw or Smackdown.
But I don't see them tagging as Evolution ever again. Batista's gone, Flair's in TNA, and Orton is a huge star now.
Will John Morrison's Win Last Week on Raw Be The Start of a Push?
8 of 26
Haha. I like Morrison as well. I was pretty shocked that Chris Jericho lost to John Morrison last night on Raw, but I'm not really sure what it means for Jericho.
I'd guess it means he is probably leaving for a while (which sucks), but who knows.
As for Morrison, I wouldn't get my hopes up. He beats Jericho, but nothing happens because of it.
Wouldn't it make logical sense for Morrison to be Jericho's replacement at Night of Champions? Wouldn't it make even more sense to have six wrestlers in a SIX PACK CHALLENGE?
I don't know what direction the WWE plans to go with John Morrison. Could the WWE pull a Jack Swagger? By that, I mean that he does nothing for a while before becoming champion.
I doubt it.
I think he beat Jericho last night more to further the angle of Jericho possibly leaving the company. I don't think this is the start for a Morrison push, unfortunately.
When Will The Rock Be Inducted Into The WWE Hall Of Fame?
9 of 26
I wouldn't expect The Rock to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.
The reason for that is simple. Wrestlemania 27 is Atlanta, Georgia -- WCW territory. I'd expect that the marquee names in the 2011 Hall of Fame class will be guys who made their mark in WCW.
I've heard rumors of plenty of people, including Arn Anderson, Golberg, and -- dare i say it? -- even Ultimate Warrior or Randy Savage.
The WWE apparently offered Warrior a spot in the Hall of Fame last year, but he turned it down. I'm not sure why exactly, but I do know that the WWE was involved in legal battles with Warrior for a while.
Also, Mattel recently released a Randy Savage action figure at Comic Con this year. Does it mean he's a lock? Not by a long shot. But it is possible.
The WWE realizes it is running out of big names to induct, so I think Vince McMahon may put aside his vendettas for the company's sake. I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't the case though.
I know I'm getting off topic, but the bottom line is that I think next year's Hall of Fame class will be heavy on WCW names.
Heck, we may even get a match at Wrestlemania with a former WCW name. Goldberg maybe?
All that being said, I could see the WWE inducting The Rock in 2012.
However, if The Undertaker decides to retire that year, the WWE might possibly pull a Ric Flair and have him retire the night before Wrestlemania.
So I'll go with The Rock being inducted in 2012 or 2013. I wouldn't expect the WWE to induct two of the biggest stars in company history on the same night.
Does Sheamus Shave His Own Beard?
10 of 26
Haha. I have no idea, but I would guess he shaves his own beard. I mean, I shave my own beard. I would think Sheamus can too. I'm not sure how dreads work at all.
By the way, the Celtic Warrior hasn't always had that beard: No beard Sheamus.
Is John Cena a Better Wrestler Than People Think?
11 of 26
Yeah, I don't think John Cena is as bad in the ring as most people do.
There are a few main reasons why people think Cena can't wrestle.
First, he basically relies on eight moves: a sitout hip toss, fisherman suplex, the shoulder blocks followed by the Five Knuckle Shuffle, the running one-handed bulldog, the diving leg drop bulldog, the Attitude Adjustment, and the STF.
Second, he generally plays the "babyface in peril" role before turning into Super Cena and winning the match. Finally, he hardly ever sells his opponents bigger (or even finishing) moves.
But I think all of those things play into Cena's character. After all, every wrestler relies on certain moves in their matches.
That's why it's called a moveset.Orton has his backbreaker and second-rope DDT, CM Punk has his enziguiri, bulldog, etc.
I think people dislike Cena's moveset because it generally plays into that Super Cena gimmick. He's getting his ass beat, then he magically turns the match around with that dumb move (the Five Knuckle Shuffle).
I also think that's why he doesn't do a very good job at selling moves. The WWE wants to build him up as this sort of unstoppable superhero type character.
Although I can see why people think he can't wrestle, I'd argue he's had more quality matches than someone like Randy Orton.
Cena actually won the PWI Match of the Year in 2007 for his match with Shawn Michaels. Yes, people will say HBK carried it, but Cena had to do his part.
The fact that people think he can't wrestle is yet another reason why Cena should turn heel. I don't think he'd have the same formulaic matches if he was a heel because heels obviously don't play the "face in peril" role.
So if he expands his moveset (which he can), I think people would see he is a better wrestler than they give him credit for.
Is Edge a Face Or Heel?
12 of 26
Haha. I completely agree, but I think we can't really tell what he is because he doesn't have a real feud going on right now.
He was on Team WWE, a primarily face team, at SummerSlam which is why he's sort of been in that tweener role lately.
Now, he's in the Six Pack Challenge mainly to give the match drawing power. It's not like he is in an intense feud with any of the wrestlers in the match.
Personally though, I think he's still a heel in the company's eyes, and we should see that after Night of Champions. I'm not expecting Edge to win the match, so I think he'll have an upper mid-card feud (playing the heel) after the fallout from N of C is over.
I'm not getting my hopes up on this one, but I think a feud fans would want to see is Edge vs. John Morrison. They could hit a four-star rating if given enough time in a pay-per-view match.
Cena or Goldberg?
13 of 26
Haha. I always thought Goldberg sucked. I'll go with John Cena.
Five Knuckle Shuffle or Ballin' Elbow?
14 of 26
Well, they both look like they would have absolutely no effect on your opponent. Haha.
They're more for show than anything else.
That being said, I like MVP more than Cena, so I'll go with the "Ballin elbow."
Will The Miz or Daniel Bryan Win at Night of Champions?
15 of 26
Yeah, I think it has the potential to be pretty good by WWE standards.
I think The Miz versus Daniel Bryan could steal the show if given time, but I don't expect Bryan to win in their first match.
I expect them two to have a very lengthy feud, so it wouldn't make sense to have Bryan win at Night oh Champions.
I think he'll get the title by (or even at) Survivor Series. That way, the WWE can build The Miz back up before having him cash his MITB briefcase in.
Will Kane Benefit From His Feud With The Undertaker?
16 of 26
Actually, no.
I know The Undertaker is usually the one that dominates their feuds, but the vegetative state storyline will change that.
The WWE is playing up the idea that the Undertaker just isn't the same right now, so I see Kane winning their match at Night of Champions although it might not be a clean finish.
After that, I'd expect a rematch at Hell in a Cell, which I see The Undertaker winning because it's sort of The Undertaker's match.
I'm not sure what they'll do between the two at Bragging Rights, but I think that the feud will ultimately culminate at Survivor Series with Undertaker winning that match.
Now, I know you might be thinking: "Well, if Kane only wins one match, then he is getting the short end of the stick."
I don't think that's true just because Kane will be in the World Heavyweight Championship for a pretty long time. That's pretty good for a guy near the end of his career, and it's certainly better than his one-day title reign.
Is Justin Gabriel a Natural Face?
17 of 26
Yeah, I definitely think that some people just naturally fit a certain role.
I think guys like MVP and John Morrison are just natural heels.
The same goes for Justin Gabriel. He's a natural face.
While he's obviously a heel right now, I think he'll go back to being a face once the Nexus splits. I would expect him to spend the rest of his career as a face.
He just doesn't have the cocky, no bulls**t demeanor that a heel needs.
He's more like the Rey Mysterio type -- a smaller guy who hits fancy moves that get big pops from the crowd. He should be used that way.
Who Is The Next Face of The WWE?
18 of 26
No, I honestly don't think the next "face of the company" is in the WWE right now.
John Cena is 33, so like I've said before, it's very possible that the next John Cena is indeed John Cena.
That being said, I think Kofi is probably the most logical choice currently in the company to take over that spot. He's over with the crowd, and has a kid-friendly gimmick (although I could see a heel or gimmick change in the near future).
You are definitely correct when you say that he would break a lot of barriers, and I think that would be a nice change.
The "next face of the WWE" is probably someone we've never heard of, or maybe even someone in developmental.
Is Professional Wrestling a Good Career?
19 of 26
It's definitely not the most stable career out there, but if it's what you really want to do, then who are they to stop you?
You'll regret it everyday for the rest of your life if you don't at least try to follow your dream. I would have a backup plan though.
Either get your college degree first, or go to wrestling school while you're in college.
There are certainly no guarantees in the wrestling business.
You may be one of the best wrestlers in the country, but it's all about being discovered. There's a lot of lock in the industry.
It's good to have something to fall back on because you really need a college degree these days anyway (in most cases).
What Policies Do WWE Superstars Have To Follow?
20 of 26
The most important policy the WWE has for its wrestlers is the Talent Wellness Program.
Under the program, all WWE wrestlers must undergo drug, alcohol, and cardiac (heart health) testing. It was started in 2006 after the sudden death of Eddie Guerrero, and has really been stressed even more since the Chris Benoit double murder-suicide in 2007.
The main point of the program is to make sure that WWE superstars do not have problems with substance abuse, whether that be alcohol, recreational/prescription drugs or steroids (and other performance-enhancing drugs).
Positive drug tests (other than marijuana and alcohol) result in a 30-day suspension for the first offense and 60-day suspension for the second offense.
The company has a three-strike policy. If a wrestler tests positive for a third time, his or her contract is automatically terminated.
If a superstar tests positive for weed or alcohol substances, there is a $2,500 fine. I do know that the fine used to be $1,000, but the WWE increased the fine because a lot of wrestlers were still abusing it.
An important thing to note though is that there are ways to get around the drug testing policy. If a superstar has a legitimate prescription for a certain painkiller or even steroids, he will not be punished for testing positive for that substance.
In addition to the Wellness Program, the WWE also likes to moderate the behavior of its performers (similar to major sports organizations like the NBA, NFL, etc.).
Though the company doesn't have preset fines or suspensions for the personal conduct of the wrestlers, the WWE will address any situation that puts the company in a negative light.
Recent examples of that are Tiffany being suspended for getting into a domestic dispute or Serena getting released for not acting out the "Straight Edge" gimmick in real life.
Not all wrestlers are required to strictly adhere to their gimmicks in real life, but the WWE does like to control what its wrestlers do even on their own time.
For example, the Undertaker was told not to attend a UFC fight while he was out for the "vegetative state" storyline.
I hope my answer helped!
What's The Deal With The WWE and Aerial Moves?
21 of 26
The WWE had banned the Shooting Star Press, but Evan Bourne (either prior to his debut or right after it) went to WWE management and showed them that he could successfully execute the move.
After that, they decided to let him do it because he could hit the move without injuring the opponent or himself.
I'm not positive about this, but I'm pretty sure the situation was similar with Justin Gabriel's 450 Splash.
The WWE is pretty concerned with its superstars getting hurt, and they don't want superstars performing moves that are deemed too dangerous.
While the WWE allowed Gabriel and Bourne to do those moves, there are a bunch of aerial moves the WWE doesn't, and probably never will, allow.
Like this.
Or this.
However, from what I've heard, the WWE usually allows wrestlers to show them the moves before completely rejecting the idea of a wrestler using it.
Who Doesn't The WWE Mention The Relationship Between Goldust and Cody Rhodes?
22 of 26
Well, Cody Rhodes and Goldust actually aren't full-blood brothers in real life, but they are half brothers.
I'm not sure about the relationship between those two, but I'm pretty certain that Dustin Runnels (Goldust) and Virgil Runnels (Dusty Rhodes) don't have the greatest relationship ever.
I believe it has something to do with Goldust's real-life marriage to former WWE performer Terri Runnels.
But to be honest, I don't think that is the reason the WWE is keeping them away from each other.
Goldust is an older performer whose main role is to help the younger wrestlers develop, so I don't see any type of real feud happening for him now (or maybe even in the future).
If Goldust and Cody are ever on the same brand, I could see a random mid-card match between the two, but not a full blown feud.
I personally would like to see it because they're both good in-ring performers, but I don't think the WWE even addresses their relationship on television.
If Goldust's gimmick was simply "(Pick a name) Rhodes," I think a feud or even tag team would be likely, but since Goldust and Cody aren't on-screen brothers, I don't see it happening.
What's Next For Justin Gabriel After Nexus?
23 of 26
In my opinion, Justin Gabriel has the brightest future of anyone from Nexus not named Wade Barrett.
I think Barrett will main event pretty soon while Gabriel will turn face once the Nexus angle ends. Why?
Some people are just born to play a certain type of character, and Gabriel was born to be a face. He just has that mid-card face look that is similar to Evan Bourne.
Honestly, I think Gabriel could really benefit from a Cruiserweight division, but since that won't happen, I think he'll probably be a solid mid-carder for most of his career.
I could see him in that Intercontinental/United States Championship picture.
He's good in the ring, but not so good on the mic. Guys like that tend to stay in the mid-card (Morrison, Bourne, Matt Hardy, DiBiase, etc.)
What Lies Ahead For The Masterpiece?
24 of 26
He'll probably be a jobber for the rest of his WWE career.
Chris Masters obviously has a good look, but he isn't particularly charismatic or good in the ring.
I think the WWE killed any real chance of him even being a mid-card player when they made him to do that ridiculous titty dance when Ozzy Osbourne hosted Raw.
As a face, Masters is used for comedy more than anything else. I actually didn't think he was bad as a heel, and I don't think he's used right in his current role. That's why I think he'll continue to job.
Also, keep in mind that Masters was already suspended twice by the WWE.
Since Masters was released and brought back by the company, I'm not sure exactly how this works, but I think he might be one strike away from getting fired.
I don't think Vince wants to give this guy a big push only for him to be released (if he fails another drug test).
How Can a Wrestler Be Bad on The Mic?
25 of 26
I think it's pretty simple, and I like to compare it to acting (which is basically what it was).
The main job of an actor is to capture the audience's attention so that they don't realize they're watching a movie or play. The actor wants people in the audience to get so sucked into his character that they truly believe he IS that person.
The same goes for wrestlers.
When you're on the mic, you want the crowd and the TV audience to cling to every word you say. You want them to suspend their disbelief, and forget that what they are watching is purely fictional.
A wrestler can't be good on the mic if what he is saying sounds memorized or fake. The audience won't believe a word he says.
I'd also like to mention I think it's harder for faces to cut effective promos in the PG era because the material they have to work with is so corny. If the scipt isn't well written, it's going to be harder for the audience to get into that particular promo.
