WWE SmackDown!: The Best and The Worst 9/10/10

Curtis EichelbergerSep 11, 2010

This past Friday on SmackDown, there were good moments, and bad ones, as there always is. But I'm going to brush up on what was the best thing on SmackDown, and what the worst thing was. This may become a regular thing for all shows, depending on how this article does.

WORST:
I will start with the worst of the night. To me, it was a toss up, but I think the worst thing of the night was the Kaval vs. Drew McIntyre match, but not in terms of delivery, in terms of results. The match itself was good, with both men getting the upper hand at different points. And Kaval looked impressive. However, there were elements to the match that, when you think about it, made it bad. And those come from the ending. Kaval lost. Really? Now, I'm not expecting him to be Superman on his first night on SmackDown, but the reason the loss was the worst part of the night was because the match was short and he won NXT.

Kaval won NXT. The fans wanted him to win. And obviously WWE got on the bandwagon too because they had him get victories and look like a top dog toward the end of NXT. He was over with the fans. He's supposed to have a championship match on PPV. He's supposed to be a break-out star. The loss I could deal with if it had been a longer match. If he's WWE's next breakout star, then give him a longer match with upper mid-carder Drew McIntyre! If this match had been, say, 10 minutes I would be fine with Kaval losing. But he deserved to have a longer match because this just makes him look like Evan Bourne a few months ago when he would get big offense against, say, The Miz, but then make one mistake and lose just like that. And the match wouldn't even be five minutes. And that's exactly what happened here. But what makes it worse is the fact that he won NXT. If you want to make him impressive, have him lose in a 10 minute match. A four minute match with Drew McIntyre is a horrible way to book a match with the winner of NXT. Not only that, but they STILL paired him with LayCool! Come on! He won! He's a Superstar now! And they still have him looking like he's LayCool's lap dog! Horrible way to start out Kaval's SmackDown career. He should have a few wins first, at least, then give him a good, 10 minute match against McIntyre, and get LayCool out of his life FOREVER! Then I'll be fine with a loss to Drew McIntyre. This is just poor booking and another case of misusing a Superstar. I hope this is a part of some big, master plan to get Kaval to a good title reign because if it's not, WWE Creative is just showing that they don't know the right people to push.

BEST:
Now I'll do the best. I would have to say the best thing that happened on SmackDown was the Undertaker vs. CM Punk match. Hearing about this match at first, I thought it was going to be a good match, because you have the very skilled CM Punk and the legendary Undertaker, who is a big man with actual skill, even though he's in his late 40's, and old man to the pro-wrestling world. Not only was the match good, but they did a great job with displaying Undertaker's supposed state of condition.

Grisham and Striker were talking about how they don't know if Taker is 100%, and how everyone was wondering that. I was wondering if they were going to keep this weakened state of the Undertaker going in the right way, and I think they did. Undertaker started how he usually does, on the offense. He began working on Punk's arm so that when he delivered Old School, it would have more damage. Then he lost is balance and fell on the top rope. The look on Punk's face showed that he didn't do anything to make him fall. Punk got a lot of offense in this match. If this match took place 2 years ago, and CM Punk had the same gimmick as now, he wouldn't have gotten the offense that he did. Kane has been saying that Undertaker is not the same man anymore, and never will be. I think that WWE is doing a good job showing weakness in Undertaker and at the same time still making him look like the top-dog he is. That's what I think the best part of this match was. They made Undertaker look like he was permanently damaged by Kane's attack. Another thing that makes this good is that it makes you wonder if Undertaker will win at Night Of Champions. Undertaker always comes out on top when it comes to Kane. Well, ever since Kane unmasked. But now he's showing vulnerability, which may mean that the match with Kane won't be like the rest. I think this is great build for Night Of Champions because everyone who orders it will be wondering about Taker's state of condition. This will make good profit and probably a good match because you know it's definitely going to be back and forth, with maybe Kane getting more offense, which is not the normal case when these guys fight each other. Punk even his the GTS. Undertaker couldn't get up and finish the match on his feet, so he had to lock in the Hell's Gate to win. That was a good way to have Taker win in this particular storyline. He could barely get up after the match, which shows that CM Punk was a huge challenge for him. How much of a challenge will Kane be? We'll find out at Night Of Champions.

Those are my thoughts on the best and worse of SmackDown this week. Do you agree? Disagree? Have another opinion? Let me know!
