Not Enough Talent: Why NXT Can't Become A Regular Programme... In The WWE
Earlier this year when WWE's ECW shut it's doors and we were introduced to NXT, the "next generation of TV & wrestling" there was a rush of excitement within the WWE Universe.
8 new and exciting superstars were going to be brought onto our screens and paired with WWE Superstars in the search for the next big thing. With a guaranteed Pay-Per-View Championship match in store for the winner, WWE were certainly clear to make an impact with this new programme.
Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater were three of the top stars in WWE's developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), they had spent the last few years making a name for themselves and now finally got their chance in NXT. Luckily, they along with the other NXT contestants, still competed at FCW events so not to take everything FCW had and leave them with 8 empty spaces on the roster.
Season One worked out well, once it was over Wade Barrett appeared on RAW with the other seven - yes all seven - of his opponents from NXT as a new faction called Nexus and in storyline they were all given WWE contracts to wrestle on the RAW brand. To have 8 guys start appearing on RAW is alot. That's 8 more guys you have to squeeze into the already packed 2 hours they broadcast each week.
It's reasons like this that the likes of Ted DiBiase are appearing on WWE Superstars each week, as there is no room for him and others on the main RAW roster each and every week. So why bring all 8 in? Well, the story was good. To be honest I didn't really have a problem with it until the finale of NXT Season Two.
Following Kaval's victory, runner up Mike McGillicutty stormed the ring with the rest of the eliminated participants and began attacking Kaval. With McGillicutty's earlier comments about the Genesis beginning we can only assume it's a matter of time before we see McGillicutty and his other co-horts show up on the main WWE roster on a full time basis.
If they follow the trend of the Nexus and begin wrestling in over-sized tag team matches, it'll won't be before too long that they can't keep repeating those and will have to wrestle in singles matches. Now tell me how over the space of 24 weeks - less than half a year - you've upgraded 16 talents to the main roster and expect to showcase them on every TV show and house show fairly despite there being too much talent on the roster at the moment?

That's why I think WWE would be much smarter running NXT or at least an NXT style show within FCW. Therefore they can pick however many wrestlers from their roster and say the winner gets promoted to the WWE roster and the rest can stay (at least for the time being) in FCW. Because once they put anybody on "WWE NXT" they become WWE superstars and its only a matter of time before they have to be kept on the roster. Just this passed week, Darren Young showed up on RAW (inexplicably with music) despite being kicked out of Nexus and losing on NXT.
And there isn't enough space to put them anywhere and certainly enough talent to get another 8 credible stars every 12 weeks.
While I don't think we've seen the last of NXT I do think the Season Three with the Diva's will be the last for a while. Maybe they might make a yearly NXT competition, it'd work better that way. But to continue it on TV is a bad idea, because with that comes demand to do it over and over again.
So come October 1st, when NXT's contract with SyFy runs out I expect it to become a WWE.com feature and fizzle out, not to mean there won't be shameless plugging or segments featured in the middle of RAW & Smackdown.
However, with Smackdown moving to SyFy, WWE can easily get negotiate another few weeks out of them but is it really worth it for the 1.0 or less rating each week? I don't think so.
Looks like the next generation of TV and wrestling is soon to be old news.

Duane Doogan has just launched WrestlingVoice.net, he is looking for writers to join and begin writing regular columns for the site. Writer's benefits include possible WWE & TNA interviews when the companies come to your town. As writing for a publication like WrestlingVoice.net can be picked up well by wrestling PR companies. Check it out.
