WWE RAW Pushes: Who Needs Em? Who's Got Em?

Curtis EichelbergerSep 8, 2010

My name is Curtis. I have been a wrestling fan since I was really young. When I was young, I was a typical child wrestling fan. I loved the big guys who were faces even if they had the littlest amount of skill in the whole company. And I liked the flashy ones. In fact, the first thing I ever heard about disco was because of WCW! However, now I’m older. I support those who can entertain me and who have the skill worthy of a championship. So I’m going to brush up on some of the pushes being given by WWE at this point in time, and some of the jobbers who need pushes.

The hot topic when you talk about pushes in WWE is The Miz. United States Champion; a small feud with Sheamus; Mr. Money In The Bank. I’m going to get the fact that I’m not a Miz fan out of the way. However; I’m not a fan of wrestler Miz. Microphone Miz is someone who I usually like to watch. Miz has mic skills that can be compared to The Rock. He draws excellent heat from the crowed and is easily a top heel with his promos. He and CM Punk easily deliver some of the best promos in WWE. However, the reason I don’t like this push is because he lacks in-ring skills. People say he’s getting better, and I can agree with that, but he doesn’t have nearly as much skill as his former Tag Team partner John Morrison, or Evan Bourne, and certainly not Bryan Danielson (or Daniel Bryan, whatever you want to call him). But this is what I have come to expect from WWE. John Cena had some skills when he first debuted, but ever since he became the face of the company his skills have gone down. He’s there to promote merchandise, have quick matches where he’s been down most of the time and then magically come back with 2 shoulders, a back drop powerbomb, 5 Knuckle Shuffle, another minute of the other guy on top, and then Attitude Adjustment or STF. Match is over. And Randy Orton especially lacks skills now. It’s the same with him too. Punches and stomps, backbreaker, clothesline, DDT, Scoop Slam, RKO. Match is over. Miz is definitely going to be a main- eventer and a new face of the company, but I don’t think that he has the entertainment value in the ring that he does on the mic to be a guy I would like to see every week.

Now here are those who deserve a push. Weeks ago I turned on Monday Night RAW to see Edge attacking Evan Bourne. The announcers claimed that Evan came out and said he wanted to seize the moment. Edge got the better hand. At that point I said to myself, “Is Evan finally getting the push we have all been waiting for?” Then Randy Orton gets hurt and can’t be in the main event. Thank God. He and John Cena on the same team wouldn’t make a good match. Then John Cena announces Evan is his replacement. I could not stop smiling. Then he gets a clean win by hitting a Shooting Star Press on Sheamus. I have never heard a crowd cheer that loud in a long time! Then he’s in a feud with Jericho, who, in my opinion, really IS the best in the world at what he does! And he gets the victory there! But then about a month after that I see him be the last of Team Jobber to be eliminated by Nexus. What happened? Evan’s in-ring style excites the crowd like not many superstars can! His mic skills aren’t too shabby, and he’s had a good wrestling background. I think it’s just what Bryan Danielson said on NXT. Vince likes big guys. The typical body builder-turned-wrestler physique. Even though people like me are dying for Evan to fight more main-eventers, nothing. We’re left to wonder when he’ll be back in the upper mid-card.

Then there’s John Morrison. Looks, talent, entertaining mic skills, a distinctive look no one else currently in WWE has. He’s got the makings of a main eventer, which he almost achieved on SmackDown. A great match against Jeff Hardy for the WHC and an even better victory over Rey Mysterio for the Intercontinental Title made us think that he was going to have a great future ahead of him. But no. We were wrong so far. He gets traded to RAW, the flag-ship program, which is for more entertainment purposes instead of wrestling purposes, and now he’s nowhere. It’s truly tragic. Talent and charisma like that resorting to losing to the likes of Ted DiBiase who just might have the worst gimmick in WWE right now. John Morrison is a great talent who I feel, without a doubt, should have been the breakout star of Miz & Morrison. WWE just needs to realize that. If Miz indeed becomes the WWE Champion, I think we’d all like to see a match between the two for the title, even if John should lose. He deserves to be there. Almost everyone knows it except WWE creative. However this past Monday on RAW, we saw him get a clean win over Jericho that knocked him out of the Six Pack Challenge, which may signal a renewed push. I don't know if they plan on replacing Jericho, but if they do, I would go with John Morrison. Now there's no way he'll win the title, but based on how he does in that match could show just how over he is, which he is very much over, and how a World Title will be good in the future.

Now here’s a push that I think can go somewhere: Daniel Bryan’s push. When he was announced for NXT Season 1, I knew I had a reason to watch. He was the clear favorite. Then, they turn him into the Funaki of NXT. What happened there? Why did they do this to him? We all hoped it was part of some master plan. Then, he gets eliminated. After that, we all knew Wade Barrett would win. No question. I was thrilled to see him beat up Michael Cole AND The Miz, who really should be the rookie to Bryan. Then the Nexus invasion happens and Tiegate Scandal happens. Bryan gets fired and I think that WWE is crazy. I was angry for a long time. I kept up with him online to see where he would be performing now and to see if this was a work or the real deal. It turned out to be the real deal, and in the long run, for a good reason. Daniel Bryan returned to WWE at Summerslam to replace The Great Khali in Team WWE. I was ecstatic! Michael Cole supporting his celebrity crush The Miz and bashing Bryan didn’t help my excitement, but Darren Young getting eliminated that quickly did. That’s when I knew we would see more of him. Even though he deserves to be in the main event picture right now, I think his feud with The Miz is a good idea. He can settle his feud with a future victory for the US title and actually bring prestige back to the title that Miz has taken away. This can be a way for Bryan to get even more over with the fans and have a successful run as champion and then go up to main event status. It may take longer than we thought, but this is a good idea. I just hope that WWE does this right and actually give Bryan the run he has worked so long and hard to get. I see a well deserved future star in Daniel Bryan.

Those are my RAW push thoughts. Any comments on other Superstars who need pushes? Let me know!
