Undertaker & Kane: Why We Need Them To Collide One More Time At NOC!
When we heard that The Undertaker was left in a vegetative state last May and Kane emerged from the mid card to perform a eulogy in honor of his brother and vowed to find the person responsible the world groaned as we prepared for a long predictable feud between Kane and the Deadman.
Months passed and Kane accused anybody of worth on the Smackdown roster, until SummerSlam when the Phenom returned and revealed it was (as expected) Kane who was behind the attack.
The Undertaker, playing the exact same character since March 2004 had become stale, merely carried by his own legacy and his appearances ruined by the constant "returns" he continues to make. Kane was in a similar situation, he's spent the last seven years going back and forth between lackluster heel and face runs.
It was time for a change. That change came the second Kane spoke about his brother following the attack and a new side of Kane was revealed, a darker and more focused monster - cutting better promo's than he ever has and becoming a credible main eventer for the first time since his original run in the company in 1997/98.
The Undertaker, who may still be the same Deadman he has been since the return to the gimmick but is now the underdog for a change. Weakened by the attack over the Memorial Day weekend, he is not 100% and going up against a Kane who hasn't been bested since then and who also carries the World Heavyweight Championship.
Between the Brothers of Destruction's first affair at WrestleMania XIV and the Unforgiven 2000 event just two years after, they were opponents on Pay-Per-View in no less than eight matches. Kane wasn't victorious on a single occasion. They crossed paths again in the hyped return of the Phenom character at WrestleMania XX in Madison Square Garden, and like before Kane didn't win and more importantly Undertaker pinned his brother... again.
How many times did we need to see the two giants square off and see the same outcome? Has six years been long enough that if we see it again, it'll seem fresh? Or are we ready to see something new?
Kane has been a surprisingly refreshing Champion. Would taking the belt from him and putting it back on The Undertaker really give the WWE Universe the pay off they deserve?
The way this feud is booked, with 'Taker returning weaker than usual and being over powered by Kane, it's only a matter of time before we see Undertaker defeat his brother and posing on one knee with the World Heavyweight Championship in one hand and the WWE just proving once again that they book the same predictable storylines over and over.
Unless they do the unthinkable and don't give the fans what they want. I don't mean have Kane go over 'Taker and lose it in the rematch, I mean have Kane walk away from this feud victorious whether it be at Night of Champions or whether it continues for three pay-per-view matches. Kane should finally get one pin against the Deadman.
By doing this Undertaker won't look as dominant and unbeatable anymore, it'll make his matches more exciting not knowing whether he would win or not and when he gets another run with the World Title, his challengers will seem more legit.
Because as it stands, The Undertaker is too unbeatable for any of his matches to be fairly called contests. The last time he was convincingly defeated on pay-per-view was in February 2009 at No Way Out when he was pinned by Triple H. Before that, you'd have to go back to his horrible feud with the Great Khali in the summer of 2006.
Kane however, before this feud, hadn't convincingly won on pay-per-view in years. He had become a jobber used to elevate other talent. Now we have the chance to change things. And with Undertaker's limited schedule, is it really wise for him to be Champion when he can't compete each week on TV?
It could be time for a change, we never thought we'd see Kane wear a World Title again and the title isn't even the focal point of the feud. They never needed it. Out of all their previous one on one pay-per-view encounters, only one was for the WWE Title, a match neither walked away carrying gold and a match that was more about Stone Cold Steve Austin as the special referee than the title or even Undertaker & Kane themselves.
So if I was to make a prediction for this match, I'd easily say Kane, especially with Hell In The Cell to follow the Night Of Champions pay-per-view two weeks after, the perfect setting for Undertaker to claim a rematch should Kane win unfairly. But if I was to make a prediction for this overall feud. All signs point to Undertaker.
So, let's hope for a change.
