WWE Night Of Champions: Burning Questions Heading Into Sunday Night Pay-Per View
Hello, Buzzers. Buzz is back.
Night of Champions is getting closer, and IWC members are flooding the internet with their previews and predictions.
As usual, WWE had their good and bad during the build up to this Pay-Per-View. However, I can fairly say that this is a PPV I'm looking forward to. It does have numerous matches that can be memorable to say the least.
Today, I thought of posing several questions that most of us might ask as we head into the Sunday night PPV.
Part of the slide show does have predictions, but I'll try to focus on answering some questions and giving some analysis more than just predicting results.
All said and done, let the show begin.
Will Punk/Show Match Produce a New Number One Contender?
1 of 13
Unlike many people here, I think that it won't hurt to add one non-title match to the PPV. I understand that in a PPV called "Night of Champions," non-title matches might look irrelevant. But still, Big Show and CM Punk are two former World Champions, and they're currently involved in a feud that can go on.
Alberto Del Rio, Christian, Jack Swagger and MVP come to my mind when thinking about other superstars missing in this PPV. All these superstars are currently involved in feuds. However, one non-title match is enough, and let's not just mess things here.
IWC is full of CM Punk die-hard fans who are looking forward to see their favorite superstar make it to the top again. Punk hasn't been in his best days ever since he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Undertaker. Though he created a supposedly promising stable called the "Straight Edge Society," and though he had some memorable promos and angles, but he has been looking like a joke in most matches and feuds. Even in his latest feud against Big Show, he was looking very weak.
With Serena released, and Joey Mercury suffering an injury, Luke Gallows is the only active member left in SES. And though he didn't appear in Punk's last two matches, but he could still interfere this Sunday in Punk's match. Did you know that Gallows lost to MVP on Superstars? Oh, never mind.
I'm not one of the people who give analysis on who needs to win because as far as I'm concerned, WWE never thinks about it this way. However, I do wish that Punk wins and make his way back to the top.
As for Big Show, I have nothing against him, and I do think he would be having numerous future feuds waiting for him. Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre and Alberto Del Rio are few examples.
I'll put my emotions away and say that this match could go either way. But I may wonder if one of these superstars could be the next number one contender. After all, both men were in the Fatal Four Way match, and both are former World Champions.
So, what will be next for Punk if he wins? And how will he ever retaliate if he loses?
Same goes for Big Show. Could he join the World Title scene if he wins? He seems to be on top in this feud, but it's not the first time we see him dominant in a feud before losing in the end.
Are WWE Taking The Tag-Team Championships Seriously?
2 of 13
I intended to add the photo you're looking at on the left because that's how WWE turned their back on the the Tag-Team Titles.
Until now, we're still waiting for WWE's official announcement regarding the Tag Team Championships. It's obvious that the Hart Dynasty will face the team of Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes after they lost to them on Smackdown, but an official announcement has yet to be made. This will be a last minute announcement that will be made during the PPV.
Honestly speaking, I have no problem with this match and I think that it does have the potential of being a great contest with four talented superstars being in it. However, let's not just act as marks and admit that the tag team feuds are really missed on WWE.
When was the last time we watched Hart Dynasty defend their titles? That was two months ago at the Money in the Bank PPV. You might think that WWE were working on a new feud during this period.
Unfortunately, other then the newly inducted belts and the number one contenders tag team match that took place on RAW's 900th episode, there was no relevant storyline regarding those titles. Even the number one contenders match featuring the team of Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre vs the team of R-Truth and John Morrison ended in a double disqualification. And nothing was announced after this.
WWE doesn't lack tag-teams. But they're not being used correctly. We're only watching messy feuds on separate occasions and in a discontinuous manner.
What happened to the USO Brothers after Money in the Bank? They're concerned about Tamina who's having a crush on Santino Marella. Did you know that the team lost to Vladimir Koslov and Marella on Superstars? Does this mean we're having another team? I hope so.
What about the Dudebusters? Oh, you're probably asking, "WHO?" I don't blame you here because I can still remember the Highlanders and not remember this team.
What happened to Vance Archur and Curt Hawkins? Do you know that team is called the "Gatecrashers?"
Many things can be said about the current status of the tag-team division, and WWE have yet to show a sign of improvement other than just introducing new bronze straps.
We have many misused talents who can be perfect as teams.
Again, the match is not official yet, but according to wwe.com, "Since The Hart Dynasty must defend their titles at Night of Champions, could McIntyre and Rhodes’ win make them the No. 1 contenders this Sunday?"
WOW! They're still asking?
Thank God they're obliged to defend them or else WWE could have just forgotten about the titles again.
Will This Be a New Beginning For The Divas' Division?
3 of 13
Unlike those who're already describing this match as "bathroom break," "snack time," "E-mail check up time," or whatever they claim to be doing during a Divas match, I think this contest looks good. It can have many outcomes other than the actual match result.
IWC members have been complaining about how talented Divas aren't wrestling. Well, that's a match that has two of the most talented current Divas in WWE.
However, the match is a lumberjill match, and the lumberjills outside will sure have their influence on it.
On one hand, they could limit the action especially outside the ring. And they could even interfere and ruin the whole thing.
On the other hand, the lumberjills existence could create new feuds in the future since one lady will only hold the unified belt, while the other will be empty handed. We can even expect a return from the Glamazon, Beth Phoenix.
Let's not forget about Layla. Michelle McCool is the "Self Proclaimed Co-Women's Champion" as WWE like to call her, but Layla is the legit Women's champion who was fooled by her team-mate. Layla seemed annoyed after this and said that McCool should go and defend the title on her own. This means Layla won't be at ringside to help her.
Will she interfere and help her? Or will she just cost her the match? Will we finally see the split of Lay-Cool? If Michelle McCool wins, will she share the unified title with Layla? Will Kaval be involved?
How about Melina? Will she be the first unified Women's Champion? Who will she feud with next?
Will the Divas from NXT 3 make their presence felt? Divas Nexus? Okay, I'm just joking here.
One more question, which belt will be used for the new unified title?
Will The US Championship Match Be Worth All The Hype?
4 of 13
Many people here think that this match could be the match of the night. Two of the most popular superstars among IWC members will face for the US Championship.
The buildup to this match was great and the hype is hot. The history between those two goes back to NXT 1, where Miz was Daniel Bryan's mentor at that time. Since then, things have been heating up between the two.
Bryan returned to WWE after being released as a replacement for Miz in the Summerslam Nexus vs Team WWE main-event match. This even heated the rivalry more.
Miz has been on fire ever since he won the Money in the Bank match, and he was able to pull some remarkable victories in various matches. However, Daniel Bryan has been on top in every encounter between them, and heading into NOC, he looks so dominant.
Apart from how WWE degraded the US Title, this match can easily be the match of the night if booked well. It could be the beginning of Bryan's achievements in WWE.
However, this match could also be an upset for several reasons.
We shouldn't forget that Alex Riley might be at ringside and ruin the match. We should also keep in mind that Miz might be thinking of something bigger later that night (I'll talk about the briefcase in a separate slide), which might affect this match.
Still, I hope they don't disappoint the fans.
Will The Intercontinental Championship Match Be Different This Time?
5 of 13
Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston has faced each others in six consecutive matches, and most of them ended in a "cheesy" way. Ziggler was able to win the Intercontinental Title from Kingston after some help from his girlfriend, Vickie Guerrero. Later, he was able to retain the title despite losing twice via disqualification and count-out respectively.
Why didn't WWE just make this match a best 4 out of 7 series? It could have been better and more logical. At least we wouldn't have complained about it.
Because of the repetitive matches and the sloppy endings of them, many people find this match to be boring. However, I disagree here, because the two can always put a great wrestling match. Furthermore, the new stipulations added to the match can make it more interesting. If Ziggler loses by disqualification or count-out, he will lose his title.
Predictions are suggesting that Ziggler should win cleanly so that he can be a credible Champion. But for me, I don't think that WWE really thinks about titles this way.
Just like Edge, Ziggler seems to be using Guerrero in order to win matches, and she seems effective at ringside until now. Therefore, I think that Ziggler has higher chances of winning.
As for Kingston, he can always be amazing in the ring and I won't be surprised to see him pull a surprising and striking victory leading to a break up between Ziggler and Guerrero. Vickie seemed jealous at NXT after she saw Ziggler with Katelyn. The NXT 3 rookie Diva could even be influential if she appeared at ringside and could really cause Ziggler his match.
Whatever happens, I hope we watch a memorable match because the two are capable of putting such a match.
Will This Feud Be One Of The Best In 2010?
6 of 13
Unlike some people who think that this is just an old and boring feud, I consider it to be an interesting and promising one. I think that WWE succeeded in booking a memorable storyline that has long history. The video they displayed even made it more entertaining to watch.
The only thing different in this feud this time is that Kane is the dominant superstar, while Undertaker is the underdog. Kane has dominated his brother in every single segment between them, and Undertaker hasn't been able to stand against him. I know that Kane did dominate Undertaker during their first feud in 1997, but that was because Taker didn't want to face Kane at that time.
Kane is even claiming that he took all Undertaker's powers, and this was apparent when he used his move-set and his signature pose at the end.
Nothing much to add here, and nearly all predictions point out to Kane as the inevitable winner at NOC. Everybody expects Kane to win before losing at Hell in a Cell PPV.
This storyline could go on beyond Hell in a Cell until Bragging Rights. Although many story-lines can be predictable, but we can always witness unexpected results.
So what do you think? Will Kane win? Or will Undertaker pull a surprising win? Isn't it ironic that Undertaker winning would be considered a surprise?
Again, could this be the feud of the year?
Who Has The Highest Chances Of Winning The WWE Title? Who Has The "Edge?"
7 of 13
This is the match I'm looking forward to in this PPV. Making it an elimination style match even made it more interesting.
From what we saw on RAW, Randy Orton was the most dominant and strongest Superstar in this feud. He was the only superstar who gained full momentum during different angles involving all other contestants heading into NOC.
Even though we all read some spoilers promoting a match between Orton and Sheamus at Hell in a Cell, but we all know that this is always subject to change. Some news also said that Jericho might not be on RAW the following night. But I will act as if I never read them.
If we look at the history of how WWE book similar matches, and if we think about it logically, we can almost list who has the lowest chances and who has highest chances.
However, from my point of view, all superstars have equal chances in this match.
Here is my analysis on each superstar.
Sheamus: Sheamus has been on a hot run ever since he joined WWE winning two WWE Titles in one year. Similar to Ziggler's case, many members here want Sheamus to win clean so that he looks credible. And again I say that WWE don't look at it from this perspective. Sheamus could benefit from the elimination rules and steal the win. Don't expect Sheamus to win on his own because this match will have many involvements. But still, I think he'll look strong if he wins.
Wade Barret: Wade Barret is still a new superstar in WWE, but this superstar has made his way to the top so fast. Saying that he has little chances of winning isn't really accurate. Barret has the Nexus behind him, and their interference can be fully effective. Barret has high chances in my opinion.
Chris Jericho: All the buzz about Jericho lately was whether or not he's leaving after NOC. All predictions either anticipated a loss and departure for Y2J, or a win and a new World Title Reign for Mr. Vocabulary. Jericho is "the best at what he does" and he knows how to pull impressive and surprising wins, like he did at Elimination Chamber. Okay, HBK did help him, but still it was a surprising victory, and we could see a similar win at NOC. However, if he loses, then do expect him to take some time off.
Edge: After reading some previews about Edge's chances, they made me feel as if he's the dark horse in this match. However, unlike most predictions, I think that Edge is another superstar who has high chances of winning. The Rated "R" Superstar is always known for his surprising and sneaky wins. This match could be perfect for his character, especially if he makes use of factors that could accompany this match. And who's better than the "Ultimate Opportunist" in doing this?
John Cena: Thinking that Cena has no chance of winning means that you don't know how things might go in matches sometimes. Despite what haters say about his skills, his move-set, his wins, or anything else, I'll only tell them that as long as Cena is in a match, he'll always have high chances of winning. That's something you should live with.
Randy Orton: This is the superstar who seems to be having the highest chances of winning. Randy Orton gained huge momentum after beating Cena in a tables match, and he seems to be on a hot run. Delivering numerous RKOs to all the other opponents, he was the only dominant contestant in this feud. So a win won't be surprising. However, Orton has been on a ridiculous PPV losing streak. Similar to his current status, he always dominated his opponents during different feuds before ultimately losing to them at the PPV. But still, everything has an end, and this could be the end of his bad luck.
If you think that this is over, then you're absolutely mistaken.
Will Miz Cash In His Money In The Bank Contract?
8 of 13
Miz could cash in his contract.
Let's face it, as long as Miz has the briefcase, we should always expect him to cash it in anytime the WWE Champion is available in the ring. We can't overlook this fact. Miz said that he didn't cash in his contract on Summerslam because he was supposed to wrestle in the main-event.
This time, it all depends on how things go in his match against Bryan. The match could end quickly or it could last long. Miz could lose the US Title and aim at the WWE Title, or he could keep the US strap and try to be the first to win both WWE and US Championships.
However, I'm really concerned because I'd be thinking who the victim would be. There are many possibilities here, and each possibility can have its own unique story.
Looking at the superstars in the WWE Championship match, the aftermath of Miz cashing the briefcase could differ between each wrestler.
Let's take a look at the possibilities.
Against Sheamus: You might think that Miz wouldn't cash it against a heel because he's a heel too. If this is your analysis, then all I have to say is, huh? This makes no sense, and if Miz does it at NOC against Sheamus it might lead to new changes. If you go back in memory, the crowd was about to go nuts when Miz attempted to cash in his contract. Since fans hate Sheamus, and since he'll be pulling a lot of heat if he wins, they might be happy to see Miz take the title away, and he might even receive pops. However, if this happens then the IWC will go crazy because they'll think that Sheamus is treated as a joke. I'm not sure if this feud could be interesting.
Against Barret: His case might be similar to Sheamus' case. As a heel, he might be hated when he wins, and Miz could be a savior for the crowd. However, this will make Barret's first title reign horrible. I'm sure that no one here would like to see this happen. As long as Nexus are there, he'll have no trouble.
Against Cena: The face of WWE and the fans' darling might be the victim. All children and women will go crazy if this happens. His gimmick can handle such an angle because he'll be booked as the wrestler who was robbed and who'll fight back for what is rightfully his. But again, do you want to see another one minute title reign like the one at Elimination Chamber when he lost to Batista moments after winning the title? This could make Miz pull more heat, but I don't think fans will be okay with this, even Cena haters.
Against Edge: Unlike Sheamus and Barret, Miz might not be cheered if he cashes it against Edge, because Edge does receive pops sometimes. However, do you really want to see another ridiculous title reign added to Edge's resume? I won't be happy to see Edge taste his own medicine for the second time.
Against Jericho: Though Jericho's fans think that he can always push new talents and put wrestlers over, I don't think they'll accept the idea of watching their favorite hold a World Title for one minute looking at how crazy they'll go if he wins. It could cause a riot among IWC members, and I hope I don't hear people still saying,"Jericho can move from a mid-card to a champion without hurting his credibility." But a feud between the two can be interesting.
Against Orton: The IWC darling could also cause serious riots among IWC members if he loses to Miz moments after winning. Orton is another superstar who has one or two silly title reigns and he doesn't need a third one. Other than this, it could be another amazing feud.
Fail to cash: Miz might fail to cash in his briefcase again due to interference from others. Maybe Bryan.
Cash and lose: This has been anticipated by many people. Although, I don't see it happening, but everything has a first time.
So if you look at my thoughts, you'll notice that nearly all possibilities might get negative reactions.
Will Nexus Go On?
9 of 13
Ever since the end of Summerslam, Nexus members have been involved in more singles action, and they're now evaluated individually. However, they are still a team, and they're still making their presence felt whenever necessary.
The team could even witness more changes if Wade Barret wins the WWE Championship. They could win titles themselves and join their leader. Nexus has lost two members until now, but they're still on a hot run despite their loss at Summerslam.
This team seems to be going till Survivor Series where they might face a Team lead by Cena in a traditional PPV match.
So, when will this team end? Do they really have a mastermind behind them, or did they just invade RAW on their own? Is it possible to see the team turn on Barret due to jealousy?
Anything can happen.
Will We See a Surprise Appearance Or Return? Will RAW GM Be Revealed?
10 of 13
Just because Summerslam had two surprising returns, doesn't mean that NOC will have the same thing.
However, several superstars can make an appearance and be effective in this show.
Triple H might make his long awaited and surprising return and make it clear that Sheamus is his target. He could even be revealed as RAW GM.
Beth Phoenix could also return and join the lumberjills in the Divas match, and even attack Michelle McCool. Tiffany could also make an appearance, but I don't think it will be effective because she didn't really have a hot feud against McCool. NXT 3 rookie Divas might also make their own appearance and impact.
Speaking of NXT, how about NXT 2 rookies? They could also try to make an impact against Nexus. We've heard about the possible formation of Genesis. This could be the beginning of Genesis vs Nexus.
What if Darren Young decided to seek revenge for being kicked out by Barret? He could cause him the title match.
John Morrison could also interfere in the six-pack elimination match, and Chris Jericho should be careful.
Others like Alberto Del Rio, Christian, Swagger and MVP could interfere in certain matches at the PPV too.
It's obvious that many superstars can be present at NOC, so I won't be surprised to see any possible appearance or return.
Will NOC Feuds Go On Till Hell In a Cell?
11 of 13
The next PPV after NOC will be Hell in a Cell, and it's only two weeks away. This means that WWE will air two RAW and Smackdown episodes only.
That won't be enough time to build up feuds, so we should expect some feuds to go on after NOC. We could even anticipate matches at the end of the PPV.
Final Thoughts: Are You Looking Forward To This PPV?
12 of 13
Summerslam is now in history books. However, it did show us how WWE had problems in the build-up towards it. Most of the hyping was for one match only.
WWE did have the same problem with all previous PPVs after Wrestlemania, and Money in the Bank was the only good PPV among all.
However, it's unfair to say that Night of Champions will be another lame PPV. The build up was good to say the least.
Nearly all matches have stories and history, and they can all be great contests.
WWE Title match could be the match of the year if booked well.
Kane vs. Undertaker match has long history full of tears and blood.
US Title match can easily steal the show, and the storyline leading towards it was amazing.
The Intercontinental Title match can be great despite watching it several times before. But the two contenders are in a hot feud.
The Divas match could mark a new beginning for our ladies.
Punk vs. Show is full of embarrassment, and Punk may finally gain the upper hand.
This leaves us with the tag team division. This was the only match that had horrible build up. In fact, there was no specific story. But still, the match looks promising.
All said and done, I'm looking forward to NOC, and I do hope they don't let me down.
The End
