WWE Draft 2011: John Morrison and 12 WWE Superstars Who Must Change Nights
What's up, ladies and gentlemen? My name is Eric Kanes and we are about to take an exclusive look at the 12 WWE Superstars who should switch nights after the WWE Draft this Monday.
Now, I know that you're probably sitting there and thinking, "But Eric, we've already seen 500 of these in the past month" and in that sense, you'd be absolutely correct. However, there are two things that make this preview different.
First of all, this preview is written by the most electrifying man on Bleacher Report, but that much is a given.
Secondly and most importantly, rather than making a fan-card with fantasy predictions, this preview will take a look at which superstars should switch nights.
Therefore, if you were looking for a fan-card with no logic behind it where John Cena gets drafted to SmackDown and Michael Cole gets fired, this is not the column for you.
However, if you would like to take a look at 12 picks that would realistically benefit WWE the most, keep reading.
From SmackDown to RAW
1 of 14
These are the six superstars who should be drafted from SmackDown to RAW.
Jack Swagger
2 of 14
RAW's first pick should definitely be the "All-American American" Jack Swagger.
The reasoning behind this pick is fairly simple. Ever since Jack Swagger has been paired up with Michael Cole, he has gone from being lost in the shuffle to consistently getting 10-15 minutes of air time on RAW.
Some people are against his partnership with Cole but numbers don't lie. Swagger's alliance with Cole has pretty much given his career a new life.
Since he's already become a regular on RAW, there's no reason to not make the move official. With a heat magnet like Michael Cole in his corner, Swagger can go far on RAW.
Since John Cena will have nothing to do after finishing up his feud with The Miz, Jack Swagger is always an option. It could benefit both guys by freshening up Cena's character.
Cena has become quite stale as a face but in a feud against Michael Cole, there's no way that anybody would not side with him.
Who else would be a good opponent for Swagger? Let's find out...
Booker T
3 of 14
Ever since Booker T has come back to WWE, he has been used as the color commentator on SmackDown, which is a bit mind-boggling. To say the least, Booker T has not done a very good job as a commentator.
For somebody who has been wrestling for so many years, he often comes off sounding like an idiot when he acts surprised after every single move.
As far as I'm concerned, there's no particular reason that Booker T is not wrestling. He is in very good shape and has no health issues that I'm aware of. It seems like WWE wants him in the role that he's currently in.
To use one of the top wrestlers on their roster as a commentator, especially when he is not very good in that role, makes absolutely no sense.
There are quite a few ways that they can transition him from a commentator to a wrestler. A storyline could be done where he is so fed up with Michael Cole that he snaps and attacks him.
At that point, Michael Cole can file a "restraining order" and force Booker T to go against his trainer, Jack Swagger.
Another potential angle could be one where after a couple more months, The Miz claims to have defeated everybody on the roster. Booker T can then step up and say that he has yet to defeat him.
The Miz needs a clean win, and losing clean would not hurt Booker T too much. Either way, considering that the current roster is not very deep, Booker T needs to return to the ring.
Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel
4 of 14
Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel are currently part of The Corre, a faction that had a lot of potential but is going nowhere. In fact, as evident by recent SmackDown segments, The Corre may be on the verge of splitting up.
However, where would Slater and Gabriel go without The Corre? It is hard to picture either one becoming a major star on their own.
That is where The New Nexus comes in. A storyline can be done where Slater and Gabriel are drafted to RAW and remain a tag team.
From there, they go on a major losing streak. At that point, they can go back to CM Punk and ask to be reinstated into the Nexus.
In my opinion, the whole Nexus storyline ran its course back in December. Nonetheless, the reason Nexus was so popular last year was because of the numbers advantage that they had on everybody else. Most of the heels now are portrayed as cowardly.
The Nexus got big because they were actually a dominant stable. Right now, Nexus does not look very strong with only four members.
However, with the addition of Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel and possibly Skip Sheffield, The Nexus can go back to being a relevant and powerful stable.
Kofi Kingston
5 of 14
Let's face it: Kofi Kingston has absolutely no direction at the moment. He is stuck in the SmackDown midcard and has been floundering around for the past year.
That is not to mention that he has feuded with just about every heel on the SmackDown roster: Wade Barrett, Alberto Del Rio, Cody Rhodes, you name it, he's been there and done that.
It's time for a change of scenery for Kofi. He needs to regain the Intercontinental Championship and head over to Monday nights. He's not going to become a main eventer on either show, but freshening things up a bit may not be a bad idea.
Layla
6 of 14
RAW's final pick of the night should be none other than the gorgeous Layla. Over the past two years, alongside Michelle McCool, Layla has become one of the top divas. For some reason, WWE wants to split Layla and Michelle up.
With the amount of momentum that Layla has garnered, it would be a shame to have her job to Michelle McCool and end it at that. The safe way to split them up would be to have Layla drafted over to RAW.
From RAW to SmackDown
7 of 14
These are the six superstars who should be drafted from RAW to SmackDown.
Randy Orton
8 of 14
SmackDown's primary pick should be none other than Randy Orton.
It is no secret that WWE had no plans of doing a draft next week until sometime early this week. The reason that a draft was suddenly scheduled to take place is due to the fact that SmackDown lost its top star in Edge.
With The Undertaker being put on the shelf due to injuries and Rey Mysterio frequently suffering injuries of his own, SmackDown has been left without a top babyface star. Enter Randy Orton.
On RAW, Orton will always be the #2 guy as long as John Cena is around. He does not have that many fresh feuds available either, as he has feuded with just about every top RAW star.
However, this move will allow Orton to become the top guy on SmackDown and allow him to partake in a number of fresh rivalries. Putting over Alberto Del Rio could do wonders for Del Rio's credibility.
Sheamus
9 of 14
Contrary to popular belief, Sheamus's WWE title reigns hurt him a lot more than they helped him in the long term. Sheamus had absolutely no momentum at the time when he was thrown into the main event scene.
As predicted by many, he dropped back down to the mid-card after two unsuccessful runs as the WWE champion.
Had Sheamus started his career off as the United States champion and worked his way up then maybe, just maybe, he would've been ready for the main event scene now.
Unfortunately, with the way he was booked, he can only start building main event credibility now which is why he needs a strong U.S. title reign.
On RAW, there is barely any time for him to have matches longer than three minutes. With longer segments involving the likes of John Cena, CM Punk, The Miz, Michael Cole, and occasionally The Rock, there is no time for Sheamus.
That is why a move to SmackDown would be in his best interest. SmackDown has a pretty big mid-card so Sheamus should defend his title at least once a month against a new challenger. If he is booked like a badass rather than the average chickensh*t heel, Sheamus could be ready to move back up within a year.
R-Truth
10 of 14
There is still a large number of skeptics but you can't deny that R-Truth has a lot of potential as a heel. We saw it when he was the NWA World Champion and had "The Truth" character where he "exposed" TNA for being a racist promotion and holding him down.
We saw it last Monday night with his fantastic facial expressions as he beat down John Morrison and drew an amazing amount of heat. Whether you like him or not, you cannot deny that R-Truth has what it takes to become a top star.
The problem with him on RAW is that he can never be the top star. The Miz and CM Punk will always be ahead of him on the ladder.
On SmackDown, Truth has a much better chance of breaking out with Alberto Del Rio being the only one ahead of him. With that said, there's no reason for R-Truth not to be drafted back to SmackDown.
John Morrison
11 of 14
If R-Truth comes to SmackDown, John Morrison should follow along. The two have started a feud together and this is a program that has a lot of potential. They might as well finish it on SmackDown, where the program would likely get a lot more time.
However, R-Truth isn't the only reason that Morrison should join the SmackDown roster. See, Morrison is actually in the same exact boat as R-Truth. As long as John Cena is on RAW, there is no way that Morrison will be the top guy. On SmackDown, he has more of a chance.
Do I want to see Morrison as the top guy? No. I've said it before: John Morrison is not a main eventer. A main eventer has the ability to draw. A main eventer also has basic skills such as working the mic and not relying on gimmicks.
Nonetheless, Morrison could be a potential challenger for Alberto Del Rio, if Del Rio wins the world title.
Del Rio needs a clean win and Morrison could get some major credibility by working a ****+ match against the world champion. Just look at how much more popular he's gotten ever since his match with The Miz earlier this year. It's a win-win situation.
Daniel Bryan
12 of 14
So when is Daniel Bryan coming back? Wait...he's already back? On RAW? Not on the show I watch.
Daniel Bryan has been seldom used on RAW ever since his return which really is a shame considering what he's capable of in the ring. He was put on RAW to finish up his feud with The Miz and that was fine.
However, since RAW is the promo-heavy show while SmackDown has more wrestling on it, Daniel Bryan really has nothing left to do on RAW.
Bryan is arguably the best pure wrestler in the company which is why he would fit in perfectly. Can you imagine a 15 minute match against Alberto Del Rio, Cody Rhodes, or John Morrison? Enough said!
William Regal
13 of 14
SmackDown's final pick would have to be William Regal. Regal is currently 42 years old and on the brink of retirement. Instead of completely removing him from the roster, having him replace Booker T on commentary may not be a bad idea.
Regal has always been exceptionally good on the mic and he's been doing a great job as the color commentator on NXT. Michael Cole and Josh Matthews are both play-by-play guys, so they'd need a third person. Regal fits the bill perfectly.
Conclusion
14 of 14
In conclusion, let's take a look at what the new rosters would look like if these were the draft picks that we got:
RAW Main Event Scene
John Cena
The Miz
CM Punk
Booker T
SmackDown Main Event Scene:
Randy Orton
Alberto Del Rio
Christian
RAW Mid-Card Scene
Jack Swagger
Dolph Ziggler
Sin Cara
Kofi Kingston
Ted DiBiase
Zack Ryder
Evan Bourne
SmackDown Mid-Card Scene
Sheamus
R-Truth
John Morrison
Daniel Bryan
Rey Mysterio
Cody Rhodes
Big Show
Wade Barrett
Ezekiel Jackson
Drew McIntyre
RAW Commentary Team
Michael Cole
Jerry Lawler
(possibly) Jim Ross
SmackDown Commentary Team
Michael Cole
Josh Matthews
William Regal
As you can see, the rosters would be just about equal. Both shows would have a solid main event scene, several upper mid-carders on the brink of breaking out, and a bunch of lower mid-carders to fill up the mid-card.
Will all of these draft picks actually take place? No. I'd expect only 3-5 of these and I'd expect RAW to come out with a much stronger roster, as usual. Let me know in the comment section who you would draft to each show.
I will be right back here this Saturday with my weekly review of SmackDown entitled "Smack Talk" but until then, I'm out!
